Il Ministro dei Trasporti di Stormont ha elogiato il coraggio di un’autista di Ulsterbus cui alcuni uomini a volto coperto hanno ordinato di trasportare una bomba davanti a una stazione di polizia a Derry
Due uomini a volto coperto sono saliti sul bus a Ballymagroarty e hanno intimato alla conducnete di trasportare un ordigno alla stazione di polizia di Strand Road.
A bordo c’erano circa 10 passeggeri. L’autista ha abbandonato il bus in Northland Road e quindi ha chiamato la PSNI.
Questa mattina la polizia ha confermato che l’ordigno era in grado di esplodere.
Il ministro dei Trasporti Danny Kennedy ha detto che l’autista “ha mostrato immenso coraggio in circostanze molto difficili”.
“Voglio lodare in primo luogo il coraggio della conducente di autobus che ha avuto a che fare con questa spaventosa situazione”, ha affermato.
Anche il parlamentare di Derry Mark Durkan ha reso omaggio al “coraggio e alla resistenza” dell’autista.
“Stava compiendo il suo lavoro al servizio del pubblico e si è ritrovata cinicamente sottoposta a questa prova, che le ha portato pericolo e angoscia.
“Il fatto che se la sia cavata bene non è avvenuto grazie a chi era dietro a questo pericolo calcolato.
“Siamo tutti grati che ci sia stato risparmiato il terribile risultato che era stato previsto – grazie al coraggio e alla resistenza di questa donna in tali terribili circostanze”.
Circa 70 case vicine sono state evacuate durante l’allarme sicurezza di ieri sera.
I politici locali hanno condannato l’incidente.
Il consigliere dello Sinn Féin Eric McGinley ha detto che il disagio causato “non serve a niente”.
“Vorrei invitare chiunque sia coinvolto in questo tipo di attività a desistere, stanno andando contro la volontà della stragrande maggioranza della gente di questa zona che ha indicato di voler andare oltre senza questo tipo di problemi”, ha detto.
John Boyle, consigliere SDLP, ha detto che l’incidente è stato “una fonte di reale disagio per la conducente dell’autobus, i passeggeri e le persone le cui case sono state evacuate in una delle notte più fredde e ventose”.

Bus driver praised after bomb ordeal
Stormont’s Transport Minister has praised the bravery of an Ulsterbus driver ordered by masked men to drive a bomb to a police station in Derry.
It is understood two masked men boarded the bus in the Ballymagroarty estate last night and told the driver to take the device to Strand Road Police Station.
Around 10 passengers were on board at the time. The female driver abandoned the bus on the Northland Road and contacted the PSNI.
Police this morning confirmed the device was viable.
The North’s Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said the driver “showed immense courage under very difficult circumstances.”
“I want to first praise the bravery of the bus driver who had to deal with this frightening situation,” he said.
Derry’s MP Mark Durkan also paid tribute to the “courage and resilience” of the driver.
“She was doing an honest job serving the public only to find herself cynically subjected to this ordeal – bringing predicament, danger and distress upon her.
“The fact that she coped so well is no thanks to those behind this calculated malice.
“We are all thankful that we have been spared the horrendous outcome that was intended – thanks to the courage and resilience of this woman in such terrible circumstances.”
Around 70 nearby homes were evacuated during last night’s alert.
Local politicians have condemned the incident.
Sinn Féin councillor Eric McGinley said the disruption caused “serves no purpose.”
“I would call upon anyone involved in this type of activity to desist; they are going against the will of the vast majority of the people in this area who have indicated that they want to move forward without this type of disruption,” he said.
SDLP councillor John Boyle said the incident was “a source of real distress for the bus driver, passengers and people whose homes were evacuated on what was one of the coldest and blustery nights of the winter.”
Police have urged anyone with information to contact them.
