Eroico consigliere dello Sinn Fein sposta furgone con presunta pipe bomb

Un consigliere del Sinn Fein ha rischiato la vita la scorsa notte spostando una presunta bomba da un parcheggio situato a pochi metri da dove un gruppo di bambini giocava a calcio gaelico.

Il consigliere di Magherafelt Peter Bateson ha agito con coraggio quando è stato detto da alcuni abitanti che c’era una sospetto pipe bomb che si credeva lasciata su un furgone a Toomebridge.

Il politico dello Sinn Fein, che vive nelle vicinanze, è arrivato sulla scena a Blackpark Road prima della PSNI e ha cercato di allontanare le persone dalla scena.

Dozzine di bambini stavano giocando presso il Sean O’Leary’s GAA, che si trova a pochi metri da dove il furgone era parcheggiato.

L’allarme è stato sollevato dopo che un uomo del posto ha notato che una pipe bomb era stata legata al tergicristallo del suo veicolo usato per lavoro.

L’uomo aveva appena guidato il veicolo dalla zona Markets di Belfast fino a Blackpark Road , a Magherafelt, dove si era fermato in un garage della zona.

Solo quando l’uomo è uscito da un negozio adiacente ha notato la presunta pipe bomb attaccata al vetro del furgone.

Bateson ha detto di aver deciso di spostare il furgone a causa delle sue preoccupazioni per la sicurezza dei bambini e dei residenti della zona.

Ha detto: “C’erano un sacco di bambini e altre persone che giravano nell’area, così ho deciso che la cosa migliore da fare era spostarlo.

“C’è un campo da calcio e nelle vicinanze, con forse 40 o 50 bambini che giocavano.

“La gente cominciava a raccogliersi (intorno al furgone) ed erano curiosi.

“Il furgone era stato guidato fin da Belfast così ho calcolato che 500 metri in più non avrebbero fatto molta differenza.

“Poi ho guidato il furgone fino ad una specie di discarica di un cantiere edile in fondo alla strada”, ha aggiunto.

“Sembra che questo ordigno fosse stato attaccato nella zona di Markets piuttosto che nel garage dove l’uomo si è fermato.

“A questo punto è difficile sapere cosa ci fosse dietro”, ha aggiunto Bateson.

Sinn Fein councillor drives van with suspect bomb to safety

A Sinn Fein councillor risked his life last night to drive a suspected bomb from a busy garage forecourt just yards from where a group of children were playing football.

Magherafelt councillor Peter Bateson bravely acted when he was told by local people that there was a suspected pipe-bomb which was believed to be strapped to a work van in Toomebridge, last night.

The Sinn Fein man, who lives nearby, arrived at the scene at Blackpark Road before the PSNI and tried to move people away from the scene.

Dozens of children were playing football at a Sean O’Leary’s GAA field which is situated just yards from where the work van was parked.

The alert was raised after a local man noticed that a pipe bomb-like device was strapped to the windscreen wiper of his work vehicle.

It is understood the man had just driven the vehicle from the Markets area of Belfast to the Blackpark Road where he had stopped at a local garage.

It was only when the man had come out of an adjacent shop that he then noticed the suspected pipe bomb which was stuck to the window of the vehicle.

Mr Bateson said he had decided to move the van because of his concerns surrounding the safety of both the local children and residents of the area.

He said: “There were a lot of children and other people milling around the area so I decided the best thing I could do was get it out of the area.

“There is a football field nearby and there was maybe 40 or 50 children playing there.

“People were starting to gather and were curious.

“The van had been driven from Belfast so I reckoned another 500 yards would not make much of a difference.

“I then drove the van to a bit of waste ground close to a construction site just up the road,” he added.

“It seems that this device was attached in the Markets area rather than at the garage where the local man stopped.

“At this stage it is difficult to know what was behind it,” Mr Bateson added.
