Un’unità speciale dell’esercito britannico ha preso parte ad un raid in un appartamento del quartiere di Creggan a Derry la scorsa settimana
Si ritiene sia la prima volta che il personale dell’esercito britannico viene impiegato in una perquisizione di un appartamento a Derry negli ultimi anni.
Per la perquisizione sono servite alcune ore e chi la eseguiva indossava sopratute bianche e maschere sul viso. La PSNI afferma che era parte di “un’indagine in corso sulle attività criminali”.
Un documento fornito al membro del 32 CSM dalla PSNI durante la perquisizione elencava le persone presenti all’operazione e comprendeva i nomi di tre soldati britannici, un sergente, un caporale ed un geniere, descritti come membri di una “truppa militare di ricerca”, con base ad Aldergrove.
Il documento, mostrato al Derry Journal, elenca anche gli agenti della PSNI, gli investigatori ed un individuo descritto con l’acronimo “MCFA”.
Un portavoce dell’esercito britannico ha detto di non poter commentare la presenza di truppe durante il raid della scorsa settimana ma ha aggiunto che la PSNI può richiedere un’assistenza “specialistica”. “Sta alla polizia richiedere il sostegno specialistico. Potrebbero richiedere specifiche capacità e noi abbiamo le risorse di cui loro hanno bisogno. Questa è la norma in tutto il Regno Unito”, ha spiegato il portavoce.
La missione dell’esercito britannico in Irlanda del Nord, durata 38 anni e chiamata “Operation Banner”, è terminata a luglio 2007 e le truppe, con la sola eccezione degli artificieri, non sono più stati visti per le strade del Nord.
Il 32CSM di Derry ha affermato di aver già sospettato l’impiego di unità dell’esercito britannico sotto copertura nelle aree repubblicane. Un portavoce del gruppo ha detto: “Questo conferma ciò che già sanno i repubblicani; che l’esercito britannico è coinvolto in operazioni sotto copertura a Derry. Adesso abbiamo i documenti che lo provano.
“Qui abbiamo soldati britannici che molestano la gente e perquisiscono le case a Creggan, come facevano negli anni Settanta, Ottanta e Novanta”.
Un portavoce della PSNI riferisce di non poter commentare questioni operative.
I soldati britannici penetravano regolarmente le abitazioni di Creggan e delle aree nazionaliste di Derry durante i Troubles.

Army used in Creggan raid
A specialist British army unit took part in a raid on a flat in the Creggan area of Derry last week, the ‘Journal’ has learned.
It is believed to be the first time that British military personnel have been involved in a house search in Derry in recent years.
The search on the flat lasted for several hours and those involved wore white overalls and face masks. The PSNI said the search was part of an “ongoing investigation into criminal activity”.
A document given to the 32 CSM member by the PSNI during the search lists who was present during the search operation and includes the names of three British soldiers, a sergeant, lance corporal, and a sapper, who are described as being members of a “military search troop”, based at Aldergrove.
The document, which the ‘Journal’ has seen, also lists PSNI officers and crime scene investigators and an individual described with the acronym, “MCFA”.
A spokesperson for the British Army said he could not comment on whether troops took part in last week’s raid but added that the PSNI can request “specialist” assistance.”It is for the police to request specialist support. They would request specific capacity and we have that resource that they can call upon. That is the norm across the UK,” the spokesperson explained.
The British army’s 38-year mission in the North, ‘Operation Banner’, ended in July 2007 and troops, with the exception of bomb disposal experts, are no longer seen on the streets.
The 32CSM in Derry said they had previously suspected that undercover British army units were operating in republican areas. A spokesperson for the group said; “This confirms what republicans knew already; that the British army are involved in undercover operations in Derry. We now have documented proof of that.
“Here we have British soldiers harassing people and raiding houses in Creggan, just as they did in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.”
A spokesperson for the PSNI said she could not comment on “operational matters.
British soldiers regularly raided homes in Creggan and other nationalist areas of Derry during the Troubles.
