La Real IRA ha ammesso di aver compiuto l’attentato con l’autobomba, avvenuto all’esterno di una base dell’esercito nella Contea di Down, meno di mezz’ora dopo il trasferimento ufficiale dei poteri su polizia e giustizia a Stormont
Un tassista di North Belfast è stato tenuto in ostaggio per due ore prima di essere obbligato a portare la bomba fino alla base militare con la propria vettura.
Il personale di sicurezza stava evacuando l’area quando l’ordigno è esploso e qualcuno dei 30-40 residenti che abbandonavano l’area hanno riferito di aver dovuto cercare riparo per evitare le schegge dell’esplosione.
Mentre le forze di sicurezza confermano di star investigando la rivendicazione della Real IRA, il primo ministro Peter Robinson ha condannato l’attacco, mentre il suo vice Martin McGuinness dice che il processo di pace resta “solido come una roccia”.
Shaun Woodward, Segretario di Stato, afferma: “Oggi l’Irlanda del Nord completerà la devoution con il trasferimento dei poteri su polizia e amministrazione della giustizia a Stormont.
“Quella transizione democratica è in aperto contrasto con i pochi criminali che non accettano la volontà della maggioranza della popolazione in Irlanda del Nord.
“Non hanno alcun sostegno”.
Basil McCrea, membro dell’Ulster Unionist Party nel Policing Board, ha detto che un uomo anziano è stato ricoverato in ospedale dopo essere stato “scaraventato a terra”.
“L’avvertimento è stato annunciato preventivamente e l’allarme propagato, ma ovviamente si è trattato di un importante ordigno. Una persone, un anziano, è stato scaraventato a terra”, fa sapere McCrea.
“Credo si tratti di un membro della comunità rimasto indietro. E’ stato portato in ospedale. Penso si trovi in un leggero stato di shock”.
La gente che abita intorno a Palace Barracks è stata portata presso il Redburn Community Centre a Holywood, dopo l’avvertimento della presenza della bomba e si ritiene sarà trattenuta fuori dalle proprie abitazioni per buona parte del giorno.
Devolution
I poteri sull’ordine pubblico sono stati trasferiti all’Irlanda del Nord un minuto dopo mezzanotte e nel corso di oggi i politici nell’Assemblea di Stormont dovranno selezionare un ministro della Giustizia per guidare il nuovo ministero.
Il trasferimento dei poteri era stato deciso dall’Accordo di Hillsborough Castle siglato a febbraio tra DUP e Sinn Fein.
Mentre la mossa consegnerà molti nuovi poteri nelle mani dei politici di Stormont, la responsabilità per la sicurezza nazionale e la raccolta di informazioni di intelligence non lasciano Westminster.
L’edificio ad alta sicurezza dell’MI5 è il simbolo più potente del proseguimento del ruolo delle forze di sicurezza in Irlanda del Nord.
La base di Holywood è stata costruita nel 2006 con una spesa di oltre 20 milioni di sterline.
L’edificio a quattro piani dovrebbe contenere 400 impiegati ed è la più grande base dell’organizzazione fuori Londra.
La numero due di Alliance Party, Naomi Long, dice che l’attacco sembra un tentativo di “riportare il Nordirlanda indietro nel passato”.
“Desidero condannare fermamente qualsiasi attacco e sono sicura che la maggior parte della popolazione è disgustata delle azioni di persone intente a riportare il Nordirlanda indietro nel passato”; fa sapere la Long.
“E’ vitale l’unione di tutti i politici locali nel condannare questo attacco e raddoppiare gli sforzi per creare delle strutture politiche stabili e una società pacifica.
“Mi appello a chiunque abbia informazioni su questo incidente di contattare la polizia, affinché i responsabili possano essere catturati”.
Il leader di Alliance Party, David Ford, dovrebbe essere eletto ministro della Giustizia.

Real IRA admits MI5 car bombing
The Real IRA has admitted carrying out a car bomb attack outside an army base in County Down less than half an hour after policing and justice powers were devolved to Stormont.
A taxi driver from North Belfast was held hostage for two hours before he was forced to drive the bomb to the base in his car.
Security personnel were evacuating the area when the device exploded and some of the 30 to 40 residents who were fleeing the scene at the time described diving for cover to avoid shrapnel from the blast.
As security sources confirmed they were investigating a claim of responsibility by the Real IRA, First Minister Peter Robinson condemned the attack, while Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness insisted the peace process remained “rock solid”.
Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said: “Today (Monday) Northern Ireland will complete devolution with the transfer of policing and justice powers to Stormont.
“That democratic transition stands in stark contrast to the activity of a criminal few who will not accept the will of the majority of people of Northern Ireland.
“They have no support anywhere.”
Basil McCrea, an Ulster Unionist member of the Policing Board, said one elderly man was taken to hospital after being “blown off his feet”.
“The warning was given and the attack alarms went off, but it is obviously a significant device. One person, an elderly man, was blown off his feet,” Mr McCrea said.
“I think he was just a member of the community who happened to be walking past. He has gone to hospital. I think it must have been a bit of a shock.”
People living near the barracks were taken to the Redburn Community Centre in Holywood following a bomb warning and are expected to remain out of their homes for much of the day.
Devolution
The law and order powers were transferred to Northern Ireland at one minute past midnight and later on Monday politicians at the Assembly are to select a Justice Minister to lead the new Department of Justice.
The devolution of the powers was agreed in the Hillsborough Castle Agreement brokered in February between the DUP and Sinn Fein.
But while the move will bring a raft of new powers into the hands of Stormont politicians, responsibility for national security and related intelligence gathering is not to be transferred.
The high security MI5 facility is therefore the most potent symbol of the security service’s continuing role in Northern Ireland.
The MI5 base was built in 2006 at a reputed cost of more than £20m.
The four-storey building is said to house 400 staff and has been described as the organisation’s largest base outside London.
Alliance Party deputy leader Naomi Long said the attack appeared to be an attempt to “drag Northern Ireland back into the past”.
“I would utterly condemn any such attack and am sure that the vast majority of people from across our community are sickened by the actions of people who seem intent on dragging Northern Ireland back into the past,” Ms Long said.
“It is vital that all local politicians unite to condemn this attack and redouble our efforts to create stable political structures and a peaceful society.
“I would also appeal for anyone with information about this incident to contact the Police so that those behind the attack can be apprehended.”
Her party leader David Ford is expected to be elected into the Justice Minister’s job at Stormont on Monday.
