Duecento abitazioni saranno costruite in una ex base militare a Borth Belfast, come parte di un progetto di costruzioni sociali da 20 milioni di sterline
Lo ha indicato come il più importante schema di sviluppo in Irlanda del Nord degli ultimi anni.
“Questo è un incredibile aumento di case per la popolazione di North Belfast”, afferma Attwood.
“Il mio predecessore ha già annunciato un investimento di 38 milioni di sterline (circa 44 milioni di euro) per trasformare la qualità delle abitazioni di North Belfast. Adesso io sto aggiungendo quantità alla qualità, con 200 nuove case sociali presso la ex base militare di Girdwood.
“Finestre e fili del bucato sostituiranno le torrette di osservazione, offrendo un futuro più luminoso per tutti gli abitanti della zona”.
Le proposte sono state presentate da Apex Procurement Group e saranno messe al vaglio della comunità locale.
Tuttavia il processo è stato bollato come “cinico” da Nigel Dodds del DUP, secondo cui il ministro per lo Sviluppo Sociale (DSD) non potrà trasformare i piani in realtà senza l’accordo dell’Esecutivo.
“L’ex caserma Girdwood è un’interfaccia chiave a North Belfast promosso attraverso un processo intercomunitario voluto dall’OFMDFM (Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister – Ufficio del primo ministro e del vice primo ministro) e dal DSD”, ha affermato il parlamentare di North Belfast.
“Dato che lo sviluppo sarà importante e trasversale, sarà anche soggetto all’approvazione dell’Esecutivo dell’Assemblea.
“Per il ministro Atwood, ignorare tutto questo ed annunciare una consultazione su un progetto non approvato per 200 abitazioni sociali sul sito è totalmente sconsiderato e contrario al processo accettato. Potrebbe essere ignorato se non ci fossero argomenti così profondamete destabilizzanti per le relazioni comunitarie”.
Lo Sinn Fein ha accolto positivamente l’anuncio ma ha chiesto “quando inizieranno e finiranno le costruzioni “.
“Se Alex Attwood non sta solamente facendo propaganda, allora dobbiamo sapere esattamente quando le costruzioni presso Girdwood inizieranno e termineranno”, chiede il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein Gerry Kelly.
L’annucio di nuove costruzioni giunge dopo la presentazione di altri schemi abitativi per North Belfast da eseguire a Lower Shankill, lower Oldpark e Somervale.

Ex-military base welcomes 200 homes
Two hundred homes are to be built on the site of a former military base in north Belfast as part of a £20m social housing project.
He called it one of the biggest development schemes to take place in Northern Ireland in recent years.
“This will be a tremendous housing boost for the people of north Belfast,” Mr Attwood said.
“My predecessor has already announced a £38m investment to transform the quality of homes in north Belfast. I am now adding quantity to that quality with 200 new social and affordable homes at the former military base at Girdwood.
“Windows and washing lines replacing watchtowers and sangers offers a much brighter future for everyone in the area.”
The proposals have been drawn up by Apex Procurement Group and will now be put out for consultation by the local community.
However the process been slammed as “cynical’ by the DUP‘s Nigel Dodds, who said the DSD Minister cannot turn them into reality without the agreement of the Executive.
“The former Girdwood barracks site is a key interface location in North Belfast which is being advanced through an inter-community master-planning process under OFMDFM and DSD,” the north Belfast MP said.
“Given that the development will be cross-cutting and significant it will also be subject to approval from the Assembly Executive.
“For minister Attwood to ignore all of this and to announce consultation on an unapproved plan for 200 social houses on the site is totally reckless and contrary to the agreed process. It could be ignored if it were not so deeply destabilising for local community relations.”
Sinn Fein has welcomed the announcement but asked “when will construction on this site begin and finish.”
“If Alex Attwood is not simply electioneering then we need to know when exactly the housing development at Girdwood will begin and be completed”, North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said.
The announcement comes in addition to a number of other north Belfast schemes in the Lower Shankill, lower Oldpark and Somervale areas.
