Un ex membro dei Provisional IRA ha descritto come “una barzelletta” le affermazioni secondo cui il Republican Action Against Drugs è composto in gran parte da ex membri PIRA
Le voci dicono che Creggan in questo momento è “come una pentola a pressione ed è solo una questione di tempo prima che avvenga un vasto spargimento di sangue per le strade del quartiere.
“Affermare che il RAAD è composto per lo più da ex-PIRA, è una barzelletta. E’ costituito da persone che quando c’era la guerra si nascondevano e da altri che sono facilmente influenzabili. Non rispondono a nessuno e tengono in ostaggio intere comunità.”
La situazione nel quartiere è certamente tesa.
Le prove aneddotiche a Creggan suggeriscono che il gruppo ora ha come obiettivo coloro che accusa di comportamento anti-sociale piuttosto che al suo scopo originale dichiarato, ossia affrontare gli spacciatori di droga.
Rapimento
Il Derry Journal ha appreso che il gruppo ha rapito ed interrogato diversi giovani nelle operazioni di “intelligence”.
Il Journal ha parlato con alcuni degli uomini coinvolti. Dicono di essere stati colpiti a pugni, minacciati con le armi e di subire un’esecuzione o il “six pack”.
E’ comprensibile che nessuno degli uomini, alcuni dei quali sono ancora nella fase adolescenziale, voglia essere identificato. Tutti negano di essere spacciatori di droga.
Un “six pack” corrisponde a due ferite da proiettile per le caviglie, le ginocchia ed i gomiti, una punizione descritta come “sadica” dall’ex uomo dell’IRA.
In una lettera al quotidiano l’ex volontariato Provo afferma che il RAAD è riuscito in qualcosa che l’esercito britannico e la RUC non sono stati in grado di fare.
“Questo gruppo ha messo la paura nelle nostre zone, qualcosa gli inglesi e RUC non hanno fatto. Lasciate che sia la gente più capace a trattare con essi (i problemi di droga). Lascia la PSNI/RUC a fare il loro lavoro”.
Solo lo scorso anno RAAD è stato responsabile per più di 20 sparatorie e attentati in tutta Derry. In più di un’occasione il gruppop ha affermato di aver “sequestrato una notevole” quantità di droga dagli spacciatori.
Nella sua lettera l’ex attivista chiede a RAAD dove sono finiti i soldi e la droga confiscata?
“Cosa succede alla droga e denaro che vengono tolti a questi spacciatori? Il RAAD dovrebbe dare una dura occhiata a se stesso”.
L’autore sostiene inoltre che il personale dei bar nella zona “è troppo spaventato per parlare” dopo le intimidazioni da parte dei membri del RAAD.
“Loro stanno tenendo l’intera area in ostaggio”, ha detto l’ex Provo.

‘RAAD are holding us to ransom’ – ex Provo
A former senior member of the Provisional IRA has described claims that self styled Republican Action Against Drugs is ‘mostly ex-PIRA members as “a joke.”
Claims were also made that Creggan is “like a pressure cooker at the moment and it is only a matter of time before the situation results in large scale bloodshed on the streets of the Estate.
“As for RAAD being mostly ex-PIRA that’s a joke. They are made up from people who, when the war was on hid and some others who are easily led. They answer to no- one yet hold whole communities to ransom.”
The letter also alleges that “some of their members have been known to deal in the past.”
The situation on the estate is certainly tense.
Anecdotal evidence in Creggan suggests the group are now targetting those it accuses of low level anti-social behaviour rather than its original stated aim of addressing drug dealers.
Kidnapped
The Journal has learned that the group has kidnapped and interogated several young men in ‘intelligence’ operations.
The Journal has spoken to some of the men involved. They describe being punched, threatened with guns, execution and ‘six packs.’
Understandably none of the men, some of whom are still in their teens, wish to be identified. All of them deny being drug dealers.
A six pack is two bullet wounds each to the ankles, knees and elbows, a punishment described as “sadistic” by the former IRA man.
In a letter to the Journal the former Volunteer claims RAAD have managed something that the British Army and RUC failed to do.
“This group has put the fear into our areas something the Brits and RUC couldn’t do. Let the people best capable of dealing with it (Drugs problems) get on with it. Make the PSNI/RUC do their work.”
Last year alone RAAD was responsible for more than 20 shootings and bombings across Derry. On more than one occassion the group claimed to have “confiscated substantial” amounts of drugs from dealers.
In his letter the former activist asks RAAD where has the money and drugs confiscated from dealers gone?
“What happens to the drugs and money that is being taken off these dealers? RAAD should take a hard look at themselves.”
The author also claims that bar staff in the area “are too scared to speak out” after intimidation by members of RAAD.
“They are holding the entire area to ransom,” the former senior Provo said.
