Le famiglie delle vittime della bomba al McGurk’s Bar stanno pianificando un’azione legale cntro il comandante della polizia Matt Baggott
Baggott ha rifiutato di accettare i risultati del rapporto, che hanno criticato le investigazioni fatte all’epoca dalla RUC.
Nel rapporto la polizia era stata trovata colpevole di errori investigativi.
Giovedì lo Sinn Fein ha sollevato le proprie preoccupazioni riguardo alla risposta di Matt Baggott.
Caitrione Ruane ha chiesto al numero uno della PSNI se è conscio che “l’approccio adottato dalla PSNI verso la difesa del servizio di polizia del passato – le indagini sulla bomba del bar McGurk e sul massacro di Loughinisland – è stato un grave errore”.
Baggott ha risposto che “voleva portare una delibera su questo argomento alle famiglie ma sono spiaciuto di non averlo potuto fare.
“Ma in relazione a due aspetti di tale relazione, la nuova analisi che ho fatto ritorna al fatto che alcune constatazioni che sono stateformulate dal difensore civico, con i miei test sulle prove non posso appoggiarli perché li ho trovati non adeguatamente provati”.
Autorità ignorata
Parlando dopo l’incontro di gioved’ del Policing Board, l’avvocato che rappresenta le famiglie, Niall Murphy, ha illustrato il motivo per cui l’azione legale è stata considerata.
“In particolare, con riguardo alle odierne osservazioni del capo della polizia fatte presso il Policing Board, le famiglie ci hanno incaricato di considerare la ragionevolezza di quella che sembra essere la sua decisione di ignorare unilateralmente l’autorità del Police Ombudsman e la relazione riguardante questa indagine”, ha riferito Murphy.
“Pensiamo fermamente non ha le basi costituzionali di legge per cercare di farlo”.
Due donne e tre bambini, tra cui la moglie del gestore del pub John McGurk e sua figlia quattordicenne, sono state tra le vittime dell’esplosione.

Matt Baggott to face legal challenge by McGurk families
The families of victims of the McGurk’s bombing have said they are planning legal action against the Chief Constable Matt Baggott.
Mr Baggott has refused to accept the findings of the report which criticised the RUC investigation.
The report said the police had been guilty of investigative bias.
On Thursday, Sinn Fein raised their concerns about the chief constable’s response.
The party’s Caitriona Ruane asked if he would accept that “the approach taken by the PSNI towards public defence of past policing – investigations into the McGurk’s bar bombing and the Loughinisland massacre – has been seriously faulted”.
Mr Baggott replied that he “wished he could bring resolution to the families on this and I’m sorry that I can’t.
“But in relation to two aspects of that report, I’m afraid the re-analysis I’ve done still comes back with the fact that some of those findings which were made by the ombudsman, with my test of evidence I can’t stand over those and I find them not proven.”
‘Dismiss authority’
Speaking after a Policing Board meeting on Thursday, the solicitor representing the families, Niall Murphy, outlined the reason why legal action was being considered.
“Specifically with regard to the chief constable’s remarks today at the Policing Board, the families have instructed ourselves to consider the reasonableness of what appears to be his decision to unilaterally dismiss the authority of the Police Ombudsman and the report that he has concluded with regards to this investigation,” Mr Murphy said.
“We would be firmly of the opinion that he does not have the constitutional statutory basis to attempt to do that.”
Two women and three children, including publican John McGurk’s wife and 14-year-old daughter, were among those killed in the blast.
