Familiari e amici di John Brady protestano contro DPP

La famiglia del repubblicano morto mentre si trovava in custodia della polizia hanno tenuto una manifestazione di protesta all’esterno di un incontro del District Policing Partnership

Circa 30 persone con bandiere a lutto e striscioni hanno protestato durante l’incontro tenutosi nel Waterside, a Derry.

L’incontro, sulla violenza domestica, è il primo dopo la morte di John Brady, e la sorella Lorna pensava che tale argomento venisse messo all’ordine del giorno.

Lorna Brady ha detto di voler conoscere tutte le circostanze della morte di John.

Il Police Ombudsman sta indagando sulla morte di Brady, avvenuta nella stazione di polizia di Strand Road a ottobre.

Prima dell’inizio dell’incontro, Lorna Brady ha detto ai membri del DPP che la famiglia sta “ancora aspettando risposte”.

“Abbiamo ricevuto una lettera due sere fa dal DPP di Derry, firmata da Elisha McLaughlin, che abbiamo ritenuto un tentativo arrogante di prevenire questa protesta.

“Questa lettera ha provato in maniera inadeguata di identificare le preoccupazioni che abbiamo sollevato sulla morte di John.

“Come famiglia sentiamo questa lettera profondamente offensiva e spregevole, dato che Elisha McLaughlin non è stata in grado di indicare correttamente neppure la data della morte di John”, ha detto Lorna Brady.

La presidente del DPP di Derry, Elisha McLaughlin, ha riferito di aver chiesto scusa alla famiglia per l’essore.

“L’intenzione del DPP non era di essere offensivo.

“Vogliamo offrire il nostro sostegno alla famiglia e attenderemo il rilascio del rapporto della polizia su questa tragica morte.

“Controlleremo che il rapporto sia indipendente ed imparziale.

“Voglio cogliere questa opportunità per chiedere scusa a nome del Derry DPP – conclude la McLaughlin – per aver scritto in maniera errata la data della morte di John”.

Dissident republican’s family protest at DPP meeting

The family of a dissident republican who took his own life in police custody have held a protest outside a District Policing Partnership meeting.

About 30 protestors held black flags and banners outside the meeting in the Waterside in Londonderry.

The meeting, about domestic violence, is the first since John Brady‘s death, and his sister Lorna said she felt he should have been on the agenda.

Ms Brady said she wanted to know the full circumstances of John’s death.

The Police Ombudsman is investigating the death in Strand Road police station in October.

Before the meeting got underway, Ms Brady told members of the DPP that the family was “still waiting for answers”.

“We received a letter two nights ago from the Derry DPP, signed by Elisha McLaughlin, which was in our minds an arrogant attempt to prevent this protest.

“This letter attempted inadequately to identify with the concerns we have surrounding John’s death.

“We as a family feel this letter was deeply offensive and contemptible, given that Elisha McLaughlin cold not even get the date of John’s death correct,” said Ms Brady.

The chair of the Derry DPP, Elisha McLaughlin, said she apologised to the family for the mistake.

“The intention of the Derry DPP was not to be offensive.

“We would like to offer our support to the family and we will await the outcome of the police report on this tragic death.

“We will be keeping a watch to ensure this report is both independent and impartial.

“I would like to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of the Derry DPP for getting the date of John’s death wrong,” she said.
