Due persone sono state arrestate dopo che due pachistani, la cui casa è stata attaccata in un attacco razzista, sono stati aggrediti domenica pomeriggio nella loro casa di North Belfast
Una bottiglia di vetro è stata gettata attraverso la finestra del soggiorno dell’abitazione in Parkmount Street, vicino a North Queen Street, nelle prime ore del mattino di domenica.
Nessuno è rimasto ferito nell’incidente ma gli occupanti – entrambi immigrati dal Pakistan – sono stati aggrediti in un incidente successivo.
La polizia dice che un uomo di 57 anni e una donna di 18 sono stati arrestati dagli investigatori che indagano sul crimine d’odio di matrice razzista.
Prima dell’aggressione, Muhammad Asif Khattak ha detto a UTV che la sua famiglia e gli amici lo avevano avvertito di non trasferirsi in Irlanda del Nord, perché gli stranieri “non sono accettati”.
Il ventiquattrenne pachistano ha scoperto in danno alle 2:50 di notte, quando si è alzato per prendere un bicchiere d’acqua.
Laureato in turismo, Muhammad ha detto che le persone dietro ai recenti attacchi razzisti non vogliono far prosperare la zona. L’uomo aveva vissuto a Londra, prima di trasferirsi a dicembre a Belfast per lavorare.
Muhammad ha detto a UTV: “Penso che questo sia molto spiacevole. Le persone non sono tutte uguali, ma ci sono alcune pecore nere che stanno prendendo di mira gli stranieri, che stanno colpendo gli investimenti che si vogliono fare in Irlanda del Nord”.
“Certo, non possiamo rimanere in una situazione così stressante. Le nostre famiglie sono molto preoccupate. I nostri amici sono molto preoccupati – ci hanno detto di tornare a Londra perché non veniamo accettati qui”.
Muhammad ha detto ai responsabili dell’attacco: “Dovete accettarci – noi siamo le persone che stanno contribuendo alla società. Se guardate a New York, se guardate in California, se guardate a Londra, ogni istante vedrete passare persone di una minoranza etnica”.
Verso le 15:15 un gruppo di persone fuori dalla sua abitazione ha lanciato contro Muhammad degli insulti razzisti.
Dopo gli si sarebbe avvicinato un uomo che lo ha aggredito.
La polizia, in un comunicato, ha detto che Muhammad è riuscito a rientrare in casa, ma due uomini sono riusciti a seguirlo all’interno, aggredendolo per la seconda volta.
Muhammad Asif Khattak è stato trasportato in ospedale in ambulanza per ricevere cure mediche per un infortunio al piede e per tagli e lievi contusioni.
Anche il suo coinquilino, di 38 anni, è stato aggredito all’interno della casa.
Gli investigatori vogliono sentire le testimonianze di chi ha assistito alle aggressioni – o all’attacco notturno.
Il DUP e lo Sinn Féin hanno entrambi condannato gli attacchi come “vili”.

Two held as hate crime victims attacked
Two people have been arrested after two Pakistani men, whose house was targeted in a hate crime, were assaulted at their north Belfast home on Sunday afternoon.
A glass bottle was thrown through the living room window of the Parkmount Street property, off North Queen Street, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
No-one was injured in the incident, but the occupants – both from Pakistan – were later assaulted in a separate incident.
Police say a 57-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman have been arrested by detectives investigating the racially motivated hate crime.
Prior to his assault, Muhammad Asif Khattak told UTV that his family and friends warned him not to move to Northern Ireland because foreigners “are not accepted”.
The 24-year-old discovered the damage at his home at 2.50am when he got up to fetch a glass of water.
A graduate of tourism and hospitality, Muhammad said that the people behind recent racist attacks do not want the area to prosper. He lived in London before moving to Belfast in December to work.
Muhammad told UTV: “I think this is very unfortunate – all people are not the same – but there are some black sheep in society who are targeting the foreigners, who are targeting the investment that’s going to happen in Northern Ireland.”
“Of course, we cannot stay in such a stressful situation. Our families, they are very concerned. Our friends are very concerned – they said just come back to London, you are not accepted there.”
To those responsible, Muhammad said: “You have to accept us – we are the people who are contributing to society. If you look to New York, if you look to California, if you look to London – every second person is an ethnic minority group.”
At around 3.15pm, Muhammad was subjected to racist taunts by a group of people outside the property.
It is understood that he was then approached by a man, who assaulted him.
A police statement said that Muhammad managed to make his way inside his house, but two men then forced their way into the property, attacking him a second time.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to an injury to his foot and minor cuts and bruises.
His housemate, aged 38, was also assaulted inside the property.
Investigating officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed the assaults – or the overnight incident of criminal damage. They can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101.
The DUP and Sinn Féin have both condemned the attacks as “cowardly”.
