Finto ordigno a North Belfast. Allarme rientrato

Un oggetto sospetto, che ha portato all’evacuazione di circa 50 abitazioni nella zona di Mountcollyer Avenue, è stato dichiarato non fuzionante

L’oggetto, somigliante a prima vista ad una pipe bomb, era stato scoperto vicino agli uffici utilizzati da un’organizzazione lealista nel pomeriggio di venerdì.

Limestone Road, in precedenza chiusa dall’incrocio con Mountcollyer Aveue e York Road, è stata riaperta.

L’allerta ha causato molti disagi al traffico nelle ore di punta di venerdì.

Alcuni esercizi commerciali sulla vicina York Road sono stati evacuati tra Seaview Street e Brougham Street.

Gli abitanti ed il personale degli esercizi commerciali hanno trovato riparo presso la Crosscollyer Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Intorno alle 18 hanno ricevuto il permesso di ritornare a casa o nei negozi.

Il parlamentare del DUP Nigel Dodds aveva detto: “Questo è un incidente spaventoso giunto dopo il terribile tentativo di far esplodere una bomba in Antrim Road questa settimana. Questi sono attacchi terribili, sia se le rivendicazioni giungono dai repubblicani o dai lealisti.

“Nessuna di queste fazioni ha un reale sostegno a North Belfast. E’ chiaro che la stragrande maggioranza della popolazione di entrambe le comunità vuole andare avanti e non ha tempo per tutto questo”.

Norma Wilson, abitante nell’area, ha detto che ora la gente ha paura ad uscire.

“Non penso sia giusto. Non so perché devono farlo – di solito è tranquillo da queste parti”, ha detto la donna.

“Soprattutto non è bello per le persone anziane che vivono lungo questa strada. Alcuni di loro non volevano uscire ed alcuni non potevano farlo perché sono disabili.

“La gente dovrebbe sapere che qui vivono per lo più anziani”, ha aggiunto.

“E’ terribile. Adesso hai paura di uscire”.

Nel frattempo, un oggetto sospetto è stato scoperto a Garvagh, Contea di Londonderry.

Curraghmore Road è stata chiusa venerdì sera alla congiunzione con Drumbane Road.

Gli artificieri dell’esercito sono sulla scena della segnalazione.

In precedenza una pipe bomb funzionante era stata scoperta in un complesso residenziale a Ballyclare, Contea di Antrim.

L’ordigno è stato portato via per gli esami forensi, dopo che gli artificieri dell’esercito e la polizia avevano operato in Rashee Road verso le 16 di venerdì.

North Belfast alert is ‘hoax’

A suspicious object, which led to the evacuation of up to 50 houses in the Mountcollyer Avenue area of north Belfast, has been declared a hoax.

The item, at first thought to be a pipe bomb, was discovered close to offices used by a loyalist organisation in the area on Friday afternoon.

Limestone Road, which was closed at its junctions with Mountcollyer Avenue and York Road, has been reopened.

The alert caused trafffic disruption during Friday evening’s rush hour.

A number of businesses on nearby York Road were evacuated between Seaview Street and Brougham Street.

Shelter at Crosscollyer Evangelical Presbyterian Church were made available to evacuated local residents and business staff.

They were allowed to return at around 6pm.

North Belfast DUP MP Nigel Dodds said: “This is a frightening incident coming on top of the terrible attempted bombing on the Antrim Road this week. These are appalling attacks, whether those responsible claim to come from a Republican and Loyalist background.

“None of these factions have any real support in North Belfast. It is clear that the overwhelming majority of people on both sides of the community want to move on and have no time for this.”

Local resident Norma Wilson said people are now scared to go out.

“I don’t think it’s right. I don’t know why they should do it – it’s usually quiet around here and it has been,” she said.

“It’s mostly elderly people who live on the street too which is not great. Some of them won’t come out and some can’t get out because they’re disabled.

“People should know that it’s mostly elderly living round here,” she added.

“It’s terrible. You’re scared to go out now.”

Meanwhile, a suspicious object has been discovered in Garvagh, Co Londonderry.

The Curraghmore Road was closed on Friday evening at its Drumbane Road junction.

Army bomb experts are at the scene of the ongoing alert.

Earlier a viable pipe bomb was discovered at a housing development in Ballyclare, Co Antrim.

The device was viable and was taken away for forensic examinations after police and army bomb experts attended the scene on the Rashee Road at around 4am on Friday.
