Shot IRA member’s inquest date is set
BELFAST: An inquest into the shooting by police of unarmed IRA man Pearse Jordan in Belfast nearly 17 years ago is to be held next January, it was revealed yesterday.
The date of the inquest was given in a High Court in the latest of a long line of legal actions surrounding the inquest into the controversial killing on the Falls Road in November, 1992.
Mr Justice Hart dismissed an application by Hugh Jordan, the dead man’s father, that senior coroner John Leckey should not conduct the inquest.
It was alleged that at previous inconclusive hearings Mr Leckey had displayed bias and had predetermined the outcome of applications for the granting of anonymity and/or screening of witnesses.
The identity of the police sergeant, known as Sergeant A, who shot Jordan was never revealed.
Mr Justice Hart said that Hugh Jordan had failed to establish that Mr Leckey’s actions had been indicative of apparent or actual bias or that he had in any respect predetermined matters.
