È scoppiata una polemica nel Bogside contro il progetto multimilionario di espansione del Free Derry Museum
Alcuni residenti del quartiere nazionalista/repubblicano affermano che il nuovo edificio oscurerà parte del murales sulla nascita del movimento per i Diritti Civili, divenuto icona planetaria.
Il murales è stato realizzato dai “http://www.bogsideartists.com/” title=”Bogside Artists”>Bogside Artists circa 20 anni fa.
Vinnie Coyle, il cui padre Vincent compare nel murales, afferma: “È molto importante per me, per i collegamenti della mia famiglia con esso e con il movimento per i diritti civili”.
L’uomo è preoccupato che i piani per costruire una rampa di accesso al Free Derry Museum – il cui allargamento costerà circa 2,6 milioni di euro – possano impedire la visione della metà inferiore del murales.
“È un murales accogliente, lo vediamo come parte dell’esperienza museale che tutti noi sosteniamo, ma siamo contro qualsiasi ostacolo si frapponga alla sua visione”.
La dirigenza del Free Derry Museum, che contiene materiali provenienti dal Bloody Sunday, spera che l’espansione possa far gestire meglio l’aumento dei visitatori del museo.
Negano ci sia stata mancanza di consultazione.
Adrian Kerr dice: “Abbiamo rilasciato pubblicamente questi piani ormai da quattro anni, siamo andati a parlare con i residenti in diverse occasioni e abbiamo tenuto incontri pubblici.
“Abbiamo avuto molta pubblicità, così pensavamo che tutti fossero a conoscenza dei nostri piani. Per cui siamo rimasti sorpresi quando qualcuno, poche persone, non sapevano cosa intendevamo fare – ma dire che cerchiamo di danneggiare il murales o ostruirlo è completamente sbagliato”.
Adesso saranno indetti due nuovi incontri sull’argomento entro pochi giorni.
I contrari all’operazione illustreranno le loro preoccupazioni mentre la dirigenza del Free Derry Museum spiegherà i propri piani durante un incontro che si terrà nel museo.
La popolazione è invitata a partecipare ad entrambi gli incontri, per cercare di risolvere la situazione.

Free Derry Museum ‘obstructs mural’
A row has erupted in the Bogside over plans for a multi-million pound expansion to the Free Derry Museum.
Some residents in the city claim the new building will obscure part of an iconic mural, which depicts the beginning of the Civil Rights Association and some of the people involved.
It was painted nearly 20 years ago and has become one of the most cherished.
Vinnie Coyle, whose late father Vincent is included in the mural, said: “It’s hugely important to me because of my family links to this and the civil rights movement.”
However he is concerned that plans to build an access ramp as part of a £2.2m extension to the museum next door will block at least half of the mural.
He continued: “It’s a welcoming mural, we see it as being part and parcel of the museum experience which we all support, but we are against any obstruction of the view of this mural.”
Management at the Free Derry Museum, which houses artefacts from Bloody Sunday, hope the expansion will accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting it.
They deny there has been a lack of consultation.
Adrian Kerr said: “We’ve had these plans in public for at least four years now, we’ve went round residents on a number of occasions and we’ve had public meetings.
“We’ve had a lot of publicity so we felt everybody was well aware of what our plans are, so we are a wee bit surprised that some people, a few people, weren’t aware of what we are doing – but to say we are trying to damage the mural or block it off is completely wrong.”
There will now be two meetings to discuss this issue held within days of each other.
The objectors will outline their concerns at a public meeting to be held next week while management will outline their plans at a meeting in the museum.
The public are invited to both as efforts continue to resolve this issue.
