La determinazione dei dimostranti è ben sintetizzata dalla zia di Colin, 84 anni, che ha percorso il miglio fino alla cima della collina di Stormont. Quando è arrivata in cima alla collina, un parente gli ha chiesto come si sentisse. Le ha risposto: “Bene, è una lunga camminata per me ma la cosa principale è che l’ho fatta e sono qui per Colin. Che è la cosa importante, giusto?”
Dopo un breve discorso sugli scalini di Stormont i dimostranti ha cercato di guadagnare l’ingresso principale dell’edificio ma sono stati bloccati preventivamente dalla sicurezza di Stormont e dalla RUC/PSNI. I convenuti hanno quindi cercato di passare da un’altra entrata. Ma ancora una volta sono stati fermati. C’è stato un breve momento di stallo, mentre la famiglia ha chiesto di poter parlare con qualcuno dell’ufficio del Primo e Vice Primo Ministro.
Gli è stato risposto che non c’era nessuno in ufficio disponibile per un incontro con la famiglia.
Era nelle intenzioni della famiglia Duffy di illustrare la loro preoccupazione riguardante l’aggressione subita dal loro familiare e per il trattamento degradante tenuto nei confronti di tutti i prigionieri repubblicani, incluse le strip search (degradanti perquisizioni), la chiusura in cella per 23 ore e il movimento controllato.
La protesta si è conclusa dopo che alla famiglia è stato riferito che le loro preoccupazioni sarebbero state registrate e inviate all’ufficio del Primo e Vice Primo Ministro. La famiglia Duffy attende la loro risposta.
Comunque la difficile esperienza dei dimostranti non è finita lì.
Mentre tornavano alle proprie abitazioni, sono stati fermati, perquisiti e molestati dalla RUC/PSNI.
In un’occasione cinque autovetture cariche di dimostranti sono state fermate mentre attraversavano una zona a maggioranza lealista, quindi gli occupanti sono stati fatti scendere dalle auto.
Donne e bambini così come uomini adulti sono stati interrogati e maltrattati nella strada trafficata. Tutto questo è avvenuto davanti agli sguardi dei lealisti.
Parlando di ciò che è successo durante il rientro a casa, un amico di Colin ha detto: “E’ chiaro che quelli all’interno dell’establishment britannico non solo vogliono continuare la loro persecuzione nei confronti di Colin ma stanno spostando la loro attenzione anche alla famiglia ed agli amici di Colin. Questa intimidazione non fermerà la campagna per la ricerca di giustizia per Colin. Serve solo a rinforzare la nostra risolutezza nel proseguirla”.
Protest at Stormont
The determination of the protesters was reflected by an 84 year old aunt of Colin who walked the mile long journey up the hill to Stormont.
When she arrived at the top of the hill she was asked by a relative as to how she was feeling. In reply she said: “Well, it was a long walk for me but the main thing is that I made it and I’m here for Colin. Thats all that matters, isn’t it?”
After a brief spell at the steps of Stormont the protesters tried to gain access to the main entrance to the building but were prevented from doing so by Stormont security and the RUC/PSNI. Those gathered then tried to gain access via another enterance. Once again they were stopped. There was a brief stand off as the family demanded to speak to someone from the office of the First and Deputy First minister.
The family were told that no one within that office would make themselves available to meet with the family.
It was the intention of the Duffy family to outline their concern around the recent attack on their family member as well as the degrading treatment of all republican prisoners in general: Including strip searches, 23 hour lock -ups and controlled movement.
The protest was ended after the family was told that their concerns would be noted and logged and sent to the office of the First and Deputy First minister. The Duffy family await their response.
However, the protesters’ ordeal didn’t end there.
While making their journey back to their homes they were stopped searched and harassed by the RUC/PSNI.
At one stage on their journey five car loads of protesters had been stopped while travelling through a prodominantly loyalist area and removed from their cars.
Women and children as well as male adults were interrogated and harassed at the busy roadside. This all happened in full view of loyalist on-lookers.
Speaking about what happened on the way home, a friend of Colin said: “It is clear that those within the British establishment are not only intent on continuing their persecution against Colin but are now turning their attention on Colin’s family and friends also. This intimidation will not stop the campaign from seeking justice for Colin. It will only strengthen our resolve to continue.”
