Garda sequestra esplosivi e lanciarazzi destinati alla Real IRA

An Garda Siochana, la polizia della Repubblica, ha inferto un durissimo colpo ai repubblicani nordirlandesi, dopo aver sequestrato dei lanciarazzi e degli esplosivi.

Un’unità della polizia ha arrestato tre sospetti membri della Real IRA dopo una lunga operazione di sorveglianza sulle attività sovversive.

Due fratelli e un loro collega sono stati arrestati sulla strada N24 a Cahir, nella Contea di Tipperary, nella sera di giovedì durante l’importante operazione di polizia.

Tre lanciarazzi portatili – in grado di sfondare i mezzi corazzati del trasporto truppa e i carri armati – sono stati portati via per ulteriori esami.

Anche due auto sono state sequestrate durante l’operazione di polizia in borghese.

Si ritiene che il sequestro ed il fermo siano la conclusione di un’operazione di sorveglianza contro i repubblicani e si ritiene che le armi fossero in viaggio verso il Nord.

Un alto ufficiale della Garda ha detto: “Si tratta di una cattura importante.

“Presumiamo che sarebbero andati a nord e le armi sarebbero state passate per un ulteriore uso”-.

I tre uomini, tutti trentenni della Contea di Co Limerick, sono stati interrogati nelle stazioni di polizia di Clonmel e Cahir con l’accusa di attività repubblicana, ai sensi della Sezione 30 dei Reati contro la Legge dello Stato.

I tre uomini sono anche sospettati di essere membri della Real IRA.

“Abbiamo operazioni di sorveglianza a tempo pieno in corso per tutto il tempo”, ha aggiunto un ufficiale. “Poi arriva un momento in cui ci muoviamo e questo è andato a buon fine”.

Gli agenti della unità d’elite di investigazione, l’Emergency Response Unit e altre sezioni nazionali e locali della Garda sono stati coinvolti nell’operazione di Tipperary.

I lanciarazzi, gli esplosivi e l’altro materiale recuperato sono ora in corso di esame da parte degli agenti della Garda Technical Unit e degli esperti forensi.

Negli ultimi dieci anni, la Real IRA hanno cercato di aumentare i propri arsneali importando lanciarazzi, esplosivi e pistole dai paesi dell’Europa orientale.

Tre diversi tentativi sono stati sventati dall’MI5.

Nel mese di ottobre 2011 il presunto membro della Real IRA Michael Campbell è stato condannato a 12 anni di carcere in Lituania dopo che l’MI5 ha interrotto un complotto per contrabbandare armi verso la Repubblica d’Irlanda.

Suo fratello Liam, uno dei sospetti per la bomba di Omagh del 1998, è ricercato in Lituani per lo stesso complotto.

Tuttavia un giudice Belfast ha recentemente rigettato la richiesta di estradizione per le condizione disumane in cui sarebbe costretto se incarcerato in una prigione lituana.

Contro tale decisione è stato presentato un appello presso la Corte d’Appello di Belfast.

GARDAI FOIL TERROR PLOT IN NORTHERN IRELAND AFTER SEIZING ROCKET LAUNCHERS

THE GARDAI have dealt a huge blow to dissident republicans waging terror in Northern Ireland after seizing rocket launchers and explosives.

A crack Garda unit arrested three Real IRA suspects following a lengthy surveillance operation into subversive activities.

Two brothers and an associate were detained on the N24 road at Cahir, in Co Tipperary on Thursday night, during the major police operation.

Three hand-held rocket launchers – capable of blowing apart armoured personnel carriers and tanks – were taken away for further examinations.

Two cars were also seized during the operation involving undercover police.

It is believed the swoop followed a surveillance operation targeting dissidents, and it is thought the weapons were en route to Northern Ireland.

A senior Garda officer said: “This is a significant capture.

“The intention was that they would go up north and would be passed on for further use.”

The three men, who are aged in their 30s and are from Co Limerick, are being questioned at Clonmel and Cahir garda stations on suspicion of dissident republican activity, under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.

The three men are also suspected of being involved in the Real IRA.

“We have full time surveillance operations going on all the time,” added a Garda. “There came a point when we moved in and this one came to fruition.”

Officers from the elite special detective unit, emergency response unit and other national and local Garda branches were involved in the operation in Tipperary.

The rocket launches, explosives and other material are now being examined by officers from the Garda Technical Unit and forensic experts.

Over the last decade, the Real IRA have been trying to boost its arsneals of death by importing rocket launchers, explosives and handguns from eastern European countries.

Three separate plots have been foiled by MI5 after the Security Service became aware of the plots.

In October 2011, Real IRA suspect Michael Campbell was jailed for 12 years in Lithuania after MI5 smashed a plot to smuggle weapons to the Republic.

His brother Liam, a chief suspect in the 1998 Omagh bomb atrocity, is wanted in Lithuania over the same plot.

However, a Belfast judge recently threw out extradition proceedings over the inhuman conditions in which he would be held in a Lithuanian prison.

That decision is currently being appealed at the Court of Appeal in Belfast.
