Gerard Doran: “MI5 mi ha seguito in Lituania”

Un uomo di affari di Derry ha detto di essere stato avvicinato da membri dell’MI5 mentre si trovava in Lituania a inizio mese

Gerard Doran, titolare della GD Textyles di Derry, si preparava ad incontrare alcuni clienti nella hall di un albergo della capitale lituana Vilnius, quando due uomini gli si sono avvicinati chiedendogli di fornire informazioni sull’attività repubblicana a Derry.

“Mi ha lasciato in stato di shock totale. Ero seduto nella hall in attesa di incontrare tre clienti quando questi due uomini, uno con accento inglese e l’altro con accento irlandese, si sono avvicinati e mi hanno chiamato per nome e per soprannome.

“Non avevo mai incontrato questi due individui prima, quindi potete immaginare come mi sentivo quando questo è accaduto nel centro di Vilnius.

“I due uomini sono stati in grado di dirmi dove ero stato e chi avevo incontrato negli ultimi tre giorni. Questo significa che mi seguivano e come sapevano che mi sarei recato in Lituania? Queste sono a dir poco molestie.

“Tutto quello che voglio fare è andare avanti con il sostegno della mia famiglia e farmi una vita. Vorrei che mi lasciassero in pace”.

Gerard Doran, che ha detto di non avere collegamenti con gruppi politici o organizzazioni repubblicane, ha rivelato di sospettare che l’MI5 aveva già cercato di contattarlo.

“Intorno a questo periodo, lo scorso anno, ho ricevuto una telefonata. Era un uomo con accento inglese che mi ha spiegato di volermi parlare di certi individui di Derry. Gli risposi che non sapevo di cosa stesse parlando e gentilmente gli chiesi di lasciarmi in pace”.

Doran ha affermato che dopo essere tornato a Derry la scorsa settimana ha ricevuto un’altra telefonata da uno degli uomini che ha incontrato in Lituania.

“Dopo l’incontro con i due uomini a Vilnius, ho tolto la batteria del telefono cellulare, nel caso la usassero per seguirmi. Appena sono tornato a Derry ho rimesso la batteria nel telefono, l’ho caricato e poche ore dopo uno degli uomini mi ha telefonato.

“Mi ha detto le stesse cose più e più volte. Voleva parlarmi di alcune persone di Derry e ha detto che poteva aiutarmi. Mi ha anche detto che i tre imprenditori lituani che avevo incontrato a Vilnius non erano in realtà lituani. Si trattava di russi e io avrei dovuto star lontano da loro.

“Quella telefonata mi ha davvero spaventato. Ecco perché voglio raccontare la mia storia. Non ho nulla da nascondere. Voglio solo che queste persone mi lascino solo.

“Sono solo un uomo d’affari che sta cercando di sostenere la sua famiglia e di farsi strada nel mondo.

“L’intera cosa mi sta causando grande stress e ansia. Non ho detto nulla ai miei figli perché so che si sarebbero preoccupati”.

Gerard Doran ha fornito quello che ritiene il movente per cui viene preso di mira dagli agenti dei servizi segreti britannici.

“Un amico di famiglia è un noto repubblicano ben noto e ci troviamo a bere. È l’unica spiegazione che posso trovare.

“Non è un crimine per condividere un drink con un amico, così vorrei che queste persone la smettessero di tormentarmi e mi permettano di andare avanti con la mia vita”, ha concluso Gerard Doran.

Un portavoce dell’Home Office britannico ha detto di non poter commentare sull’accaduto.

“Il Ministero degli Interni non può pronunciarsi su questioni relative alle operazioni di sicurezza”, ha spiegato il portavoce.

MI5 followed me to Lithuania

A Derry businessman claims he was approached by members of MI5 whilst visiting Lithuania earlier this month.

Gerard Doran, proprietor of ‘GD Textyles’ in Derry, was preparing to meet with clients in the lobby of a hotel in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius when he claims two men approached him and asked him to supply information on dissident republican activity in Derry.

“It’s left me in complete shock. I was sitting in the lobby waiting to meet with three clients when these two men, one with an English accent and the other with an Irish accent, came up to me and addressed me by my first name and by my nickname.

“I’d never met these two individuals before so you can imagine how I felt when this happened in the middle of Vilnius.

“The two men were able to tell me where I had been and who I had been meeting over the previous three days. This meant they were following me and how did they know I was going to Lithuania? This is nothing short of harassment.

“All I want to do is get on with supporting my family and making a living. I wish they would just leave me alone.”

Mr. Doran, who said he has no links to any political groups or republican organisations, revealed that the encounter in Lithuania is not the first time he suspected MI5 of contacting him.

“It was around about this time last year when I received a phone call. It was a man with an English accent and he explained to me that he wanted to talk to me about certain individuals in Derry. I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about and politely asked him to leave me alone.”

Mr. Doran claimed that after arriving back in Derry last week he received another phone call from one of the men he encountered in Lithuania.

“After the encounter with the two men in Vilnius, I took the battery out of my mobile phone in case they were using it to follow me. As soon as I got back to Derry I put the battery back into the phone, charged it and a few hours later one of the men rang me.

“He repeated himself over and over again. He wanted to talk to me about certain individuals in Derry and said he could help me. He even said the three Lithuanian businessmen I’d gone to meet in the hotel lobby in Vilnius weren’t actually Lithuanians. He said they were Russians and I should stay away from them.

“That phone call really spooked me. That’s why I want to tell my story. I’ve nothing to hide whatsoever but I just want these people to leave me alone.

“I am just a businessman trying to support his family and make his way in the world.

“The whole thing is causing me great stress and anxiety. I haven’t told my children about this because I know they would worry – I shouldn’t have to live like this.”

Mr. Doran offered his own reason for why he thinks he is being targeted by British intelligence operatives.

“A friend of the family is a well known republican and I would drink with him the odd time – that’s the only explanation I can come up with.

“It’s not a crime to share a drink with a friend so I wish these people would stop hassling me and let me get on with my life,” he said.

When contacted by the Sunday Journal a spokesperson for the British Home Office said they could not comment on the alleged incident.

“The Home Office cannot comment on matters pertaining to security operations.”
