Politici dello Sinn Féin e gente comune al funerale dell’ex comandante dell’IRA Gerard “Jock” Davison, ucciso settimana scorsa a Belfast
Martedì mattina Gerard “Jock” Davison, 47 anni, si stava recando al lavoro presso il centro comunitario del quartiere di Markets quando è stato ripetutamente raggiunto da colpi di arma da fuoco.
L’ex comandante dei Provisional IRA è morto sulla scena dell’agguato, nonostante gli sforzi dei paramedici.
Il corteo funebre è partito dalla casa della sorella di Davison, sabato mattina, muovendosi verso il cimitero di Milltown dove l’uomo è stato sepolto. La bara era avvolta dal tricolore irlandese e sopra era posizionato il basco nero.
“Un solitario suonatore di cornamusa ha guidato la processione, partita dalla casa della sorella e giunta fino alla casa di Gerard Davison” ha raccontato la giornalista di Utv Munier Abdalla.
“La processione si è fermata nel punto esatto in cui Davison è stato assassinato”.

I membri della sua famiglia hanno tenuto una breve messa nel punto in cui l’uomo è stato colpito a morte, a pochi metri dalla sua abitazione.
Centinaia di persone erano presenti al funerale. Tra di loro l’ex sindaco di Belfast Niall Ó Donnghaile, Gerry Kelly ed Alex Maskey. A trasportare la bara per un breve tratto anche l’ex compagno di lotta Bobby Storey.
Non c’era alcun agente di polizia a sorvegliare l’area, mentre un elicottero della PSNI volteggiava in aria.
Gli investigatori continuano a chiedere alle persone presenti nella zona di Welsh Street nel quartiere di Markets, South Belfast, di farsi avanti se hanno delle informazioni sull’assassinio.
Tre uomini sono stati arrestati nei giorni seguenti alla morte di Davison ma sono stati rilasciati tutti senza alcuna accusa.

Funeral for ex-IRA commander murdered in Belfast
Sinn Féin politicians were among mourners who attended the funeral of former IRA commander Gerard Jock Davison, who was shot dead in Belfast earlier this week.
Mr Davison, who was 47 and from the Markets area, was walking to a local community centre where he worked, when he was shot a number of times on Tuesday morning.
He died at the scene despite the efforts of local people and paramedics to save him, police said.
The funeral procession left from his sister’s home on Saturday morning before making its way to Milltown Cemetery where he was buried. The coffin was draped with an Irish tricolour and a black beret.
“A sole piper led the procession, as it made its way from a relative’s house through the Markets area to Gerard Davison’s family home,” UTV reporter Munier Abdalla described from the scene.
“The procession stopped at the exact spot where he was shot dead.”

Family members held a memorial service near where he was shot, yards from his home.
Hundreds of people were present including the city’s former lord mayor Niall Ó Donnghaile and Sinn Féin colleagues Alex Maskey and Gerry Kelly.
There was no police presence but a police helicopter flew above the area.
Detectives who are investigating Mr Davison’s murder are continuing to appeal to people who were in the Welsh Street area at the time of the shooting and who may have information to contact them at Musgrave police station.
Three men, aged 28, 27 and 41, who were arrested by detectives earlier in the week were all released without charge.
