Gerard McManus, arrestato per la sparatoria di Garrison, era un soldato riservista irlandese

Gerard James McManus, 26 anni da Fern Hill a Letterkenny, Contea di Donegal, è comparso in tribunale mercoledì, accusato di tentativo di omicidio di un apprendista poliziotto.

McManus avrebbe scaricato la sua arma mentre fuggiva dalla casa del poliziotto nel villaggio di confine di Garrison, Contea di Fermanagh, quando sono arrivati i poliziotti in abiti civili.

Un portavoce delle forze di difesa irlandesi ha dichiarato che Gerard McManus aveva aderito all’Irish Reserve Defence Force nel 2000, ed è stato membro dell’unità Carndonagh nella Contea di Donegal.

McManus non si era presentato per compiti di parata e non aveva preso parte ad alcun corso di formazione per gli ultimi due anni, ha affermato.

Il processo per il licenziamento di McManus si è concluso martedì.

McManus è apparso in tribunale insieme al suo co-imputato, Kevin Barry Nolan, 32 anni.

Insieme all’accusa di tentato omicidio per McManus e Nolan, da Main Street a Black Lion, Contea di Cavan, devono rispondere di possesso di un’arma e munizioni con l’intento di mettere in pericolo la vita.

Resistenza all’arresto

McManus viene accusato di aver utilizzato un’arma da fuoco per resistere all’arresto.

Il sergente di polizia Ronnie Gibson ha detto al giudice distrettuale Bernie Kelly che poteva collegare entrambi gli uomini a tutte le accuse.

Entrambi sono stati rimandati in custodia cautelare e compariranno via teleconferenza presso la Enniskillen Magistrates Court il prossimo mese.

Un’ora dopo il presunto tentativo di omicidio in Garrison, un’autobomba da 180 chilogrammi è stata abbandonata presso la sede del Northern Ireland Policing Board a Belfast.

Ma l’esplosivo non è detonato.

Entrambi gli incidenti sono stati attribuiti ai repubblicani contrari al processo di pace.

Accused gunman dismissed from Irish army

One of the men accused of trying to kill a police officer in Co Fermanagh was in the process of being dismissed by the Irish Army Reserve Defence Forces.

Gerard James McManus, 26, from Fern Hill in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, appeared in court on Wednesday charged with attempting to murder the trainee officer.

Mr McManus allegedly discharged his weapon as he fled from the home of the student officer in the border village of Garrison in Co Fermanagh when plain clothes officers arrived on Saturday night.

An Irish defence forces spokesperson said Gerard McManus had joined the Irish Reserve Defence Force in 2000, and was a member of the Carndonagh unit in Co Donegal.

Mr McManus had not shown up for parade duties or taken part in any training for the last two years, he said.

The process to have Mr McManus discharged was completed on Tuesday.

Mr McManus appeared in court along with his co-accused, Kevin Barry Nolan, 32.

As well as the attempted murder charge McManus and Nolan, from Main Street, Black Lion, Co Cavan, also face counts of possessing a weapon and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Resisting arrest

McManus is additionally charged with using a firearm to resist arrest.

Police Detective Sergeant Ronnie Gibson told District Judge Bernie Kelly that he could connect both men with all of the charges.

Both were remanded in custody to appear via videolink at Enniskillen Magistrates’ Court next month.

Within an hour of the alleged murder bid in Garrison, a 400lb car bomb was abandoned at the headquarters of the Northern Ireland Policing Board in Belfast.

But the explosives failed to detonate.

Both incidents have been blamed on dissident republicans opposed to the peace process.
