Il presidente dello Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams, ha trascorso la notte in custodia della polizia presso la stazione di polizia di Antrim dopo essere stato interrogato sull’omicidio di Jean McConville
Gerry Adams, presunto numero uno dei Provisional IRA a Belfast nel 1972, quando avvenne l’omicidio di Jean McConville, si è recato dagli investigatori della stazione di polizia di Antrim intorno alle 19 di ieri sera.
Il sessantacinquenne di West Belfast si è presentato spontaneamente insieme al suo avvocato presso l’Unità Indagini sul Terrorismo della PSNI.
Gerry Adams è stato interrogato dagli uomini dell’unità (Terrorist Investigation Unit, TIU) riguardo all’omicidio di Jean McConville, avvenuto oltre quarant’anni fa.
Gli interrogatori sono ripresi questa mattina presso la Serious Crime Suite, l’area della stazione di polizia in cui vengono trasferiti i presunti autori di crimini.
Gerry Adams è stato arrestato in base alla Sezione 41 della Legge sul Terrorismo e può essere trattenuto per massimo 48 ore prima di venire accusato formalmente o rilasciato.
Il repubblicano ha sempre negato qualsiasi coinvolgimento nell’omicidio. Ha anche negato di essere mai stato un membro dell’IRA.
Prima di consegnarsi alla polizia, Adams ha detto: “Mentre ho preoccupazioni per i tempi, mi incontrerò volontariamente con la PSNI questa sera”.
Il suo ex aiutante Ivor Bell recentemente è stato accusato di partecipazione al sequestro e all’omicidio di Jean McConville.
Bell è stato rilasciato con la condizionale dall’Alta Corte di Belfast.
Adams aveva chiesto al suo avvocato di scrivere alla PSNI per chiedere agli investigatori se erano intenzionati ad interrogarlo sull’omicidio.
Brendan “The Dark” Hughes, ex membro dell’IRA scomparso recentemente e vecchio amico del presidente dello Sinn Féin, nel corso delle interviste rilasciate al Boston College aveva affermato che l’ordine per rapire ed uccidere la McConville proveniva da Gerry Adams.
Nell’ultimo periodo sono state fermate anche alcune donne in relazione alla scomparsa della donna, madre di dieci figli e la più famosa dei “Disappeared”.
La famiglia di Jean McConville ha accolto con favore l’arresto di Adams, dicendo che “alla fine l’indagine della PSNI si sta muovendo nella giusta direzione. Noi vogliamo giustizia per nostra madre”.
Jean McConville aveva 37 anni quando fu rapita dalla sua casa ai Divis Flats a Falls Road nel 1972.
La prossima settimana avrebbe compiuto 80 anni.

JEAN MCCONVILLE MURDER: GERRY ADAMS STILL BEING QUIZZED IN POLICE STATION
SINN Fein chief Gerry Adams has spent the night in police custody after being questioned about the murder 42 years ago of Jean McConville.
Adams, the former IRA boss in Belfast at the time of Mrs McConville’s murder in 1972, presented himself to detectives at the serious crime suite in Antrim around 7 pm last night.
The 65-year-old went voluntarily with his solicitor by prior arrangement with the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit.
He was being quizzed by senior detectives from the TIU over the mother-of-ten’s murder four decades ago.
Questioning will resume this morning at the anti-terror suite.
Adams was arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act and can be held for up to 48 hours before being charged or released.
The Louth TD has always denied involvement in the killing. He has also denied ever being a member of the IRA.
Before handing himself in, Adams said: “While I have concerns about the timing, I am voluntarily meeting with the PSNI this evening.”
His former Adjutant Ivor Bell was recently charged in connection with the mother’s murder and abduction.
Bell was remanded in custody but later released on High Court bail.
Adams recently asked his solicitor to write to the PSNI to ask detectives if they wished to interview him about the murder.
In recorded interviews for the Boston Tapes, former IRA man and close pal of the Sinn Fein president, Brendan Hughes, said that Adams had given the order for Mrs McConville’s abduction and murder.
A number of women have also been arrested in recent weeks in connection with Mrs McConville’s murder.
Her family have welcome Adams’ arrest saying that “at last the PSNI investigation is moving in the right direction. We just want justice for our mother.”
Mrs McConville was aged 37 when she was abducted from her Divis Flats home off the Falls Road in 1972.
Next week she would be 80 if she was still alive.
