Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha chiesto un incontro con l’Orange Order dopo la violenza scoppiata nell’interfaccia di Ardoyne, North Belfast, dove si sono svolte alcune parate contenziose.
Secondo Adams l’organizzazione orangista deve aprire un dialogo sia con lo Sinn Fein che con i residenti nazionalisti che si oppongono al passaggio degli orangisti nelle loro comunità.
“L’Ordine di Orange ha bisogno di farsi avanti e dare il proprio contributo al processo di pace”, ha detto Adams. “Ciò significa dialogare con i residenti. Ciò significa anche dialogo con il Sinn Fein. Ho scritto all’Orange Order molte volte nel corso degli anni alla ricerca di un incontro. Rilancio ancora oggi il mio appello. Il lavoro per prevenire il ripetersi della violenza di questa settimana deve cominciare adesso”.
Venti agenti della PSNI sono rimasti feriti nelle violenze, scoppiate nell’interfaccia di Ardoyne a North Belfast.
Centinaia di poliziotti in assetto antisommossa erano presenti nel quartiere per mantenere divise le fazioni delle due comunità mentre la parata di rientro orangista attraversava l’area dopo le celebrazioni del 12 luglio che segnano l’anniversario della Battaglia del Boyne del 1690.
Una parata nazionalista di protesta si è tenuta lo stesso giorno per contestare il passaggio degli orangisti nel quartiere.
Tre blast bomb sono state lanciate e dieci colpi di arma da fuoco sono stati sparati contro la polizia, senza provocare feriti. Tre autovetture sono state sequestrate durante i disordini.
Gerry Adams ha detto che il Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) ha sbagliato a tenere la propria marcia di protesta perché ha provocato un innalzamento delle tensioni settarie.
“Ho il sospetto che molti orangisti decenti preferiscano di gran lunga la gente che parla delle tante parate che passano senza incidenti piuttosto che sulle scene di violenza scoppiata intorno ad una minoranza di parate”, ha spiegato il leader dello Sinn Fein. “Questo non accadrà se otterremo situazioni come quella di North Belfast”.
Nel frattempo, quattro uomini sono stati sottoposti a custodia cautelare dopo essere comparsi in tribunale in relazione ai disordini.
Adams seeks Orange Order meeting
Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has called for a meeting with the Orange Order following violence at a Belfast flashpoint where contentious parades were held.
He said the organisation must open up dialogue with both his party and nationalist residents opposed to Orangemen parading through their communities.
“The Orange Order needs to step forward and make their contribution to the peace process,” said Mr Adams. “That means dialogue with residents. It also means dialogue with Sinn Fein. I have written to the Orange Order many times over the years seeking a meeting. I repeat that call again today. The work to prevent a repeat of this week’s violence must begin now.”
Up to 20 PSNI officers were injured in the violence, which erupted at the Protestant/Catholic interface at Ardoyne in north Belfast.
Hundreds of riot police moved in to keep factions from both sides of the community apart as Orangemen returned through the area following a July 12 parade marking the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.
A separate nationalist parade was held on the same day in protest at the Orange march.
Three blast bombs were thrown and up to 10 shots were fired by a gunman. Three cars were also hijacked in the riot scenes.
Mr Adams said it was a mistake for the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective to hold its counter march, saying it resulted in a rise in sectarian tensions.
“I suspect that many decent Orangemen would far prefer people were talking about the many parades that pass without incident rather than about the scenes of violence surrounding a minority of parades,” said the Sinn Fein leader. This won’t happen while we get situations such as that in north Belfast.”
Meanwhile, four men have been remanded in custody after appearing in court in connection with the riots.
