Il presidente dello Sinn Fein ha chiesto un’indagine pubblica sulla morte di 11 persone durante l’operazione Demetrius, avvenuta a West Belfast 40 anni fa
Un murales è stato svelato giovedì per commemorare le vittime.
Adams ha affermato: “E’ un mio convincimento che la differenza tra il Bloody Sunday e ciò che avvenne a Ballymurphy è che il Bloody Sunday avvenne in mezz’ora alla presenza di telecamere.
“Di certo quanto avvenne a Ballymurphy durò tra 36 e 48 ore, nel mezzo dell’internamento e subito dopo”.
Gli omicidi di Ballymurphy avvennero durante l’Operazione Demetrius (meglio conosciuta come Internamento) compiuta dall’esercito britannico.
Le truppe dissero di aver aperto il fuoco solo dopo essere state attaccate dai repubblicani.
Tra le vittime un prete cattolico, Padre Hugh Mullan, e la madre di 8 figli, Joan Connolly. Il murales include la raffigurazione delle vittime.
Adams sta cercando un incontro con il primo ministro Gordon Brown, ma Brown ha detto che è una materia della quale si occupa il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord, Shaun Woodward.
Il leader dello Sinn Fein ha aggiunto: “Il caso che è stato posto è inconfutabile. E’ molto, molto chiaro che c’era un’operazione omicida a Ballymurphy, con i Parà coinvolti. E ironicamente proprio gli stessi Parà sono andati a Derry poco tempo dopo.
“Le famiglie vogliono un’indagine indipendente internazionale, vogliono che il governo britannico chieda scusa per quello che fece e desiderano il sostegno di tutti quelli interessanti alla verità e alla giustizia”.

Adams calls for Ballymurphy inquiry
Gerry Adams has called for a public inquiry into the deaths of 11 people during operation Demetrius in west Belfast 40 years ago.
A mural was unveiled on Thursday in the area commemorating the dead.
Mr Adams said: “It is my strong view that the difference between Bloody Sunday and what happened in Ballymurphy is that Bloody Sunday happened in half an hour almost in the presence of television cameras.
“Of course what happened in Ballymurphy happened over 36 or 48 hours and in the middle of internment and the immediate aftermath.”
The Ballymurphy killings took place during the Army’s Operation Demetrius.
The troops claimed they opened fire, after being shot at by republicans.
The victims included a Catholic priest, Father Hugh Mullan and a mother-of-eight, Joan Connolly. The mural includes depictions of the victims.
Mr Adams is seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown but Mr Brown said Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward was dealing with it.
The Sinn Fein leader added: “The case that has been put is irrefutable, it is very, very clear that there was a killing operation in Ballymurphy and that the Paras came in and ironically enough exactly the same Paras went into Derry a short time after.
“The families want an independent international investigation, they want the British government to apologise for what it did and they want the support of everyone interested in truth and justice.”
