Jim McDowell, 60 anni, redattore del quotidiano dublinese Sunday World, è stato colpito a calci e pugni da quattro uomini mentre si trovava a poca distanza dalla City Hall.
E’ stato ferito alla testa, alle braccia ed alle gambe.
L’aggressione è avvenuta dopo sole due settimane dalla violenza contro la sua autovettura parcheggiata fuori dal tribunale di Craigavon, dove era andato ad ascoltare le deposizioni di alcuni uomini accusati per la morte di uno dei suoi colleghi giornalisti, Martin O’Hagan, ucciso dai paramilitari lealisti con un colpo di pistola a Lurgan, nel settembre 2001.
McDowell stava visitando il mercatino di Natale di Belfast nei terreni della City Hall quando è stato colpito e gettato a terra. Prima aveva partecipato ad un ricevimento speciale per James Kelly, giornalista dell’Irish News.
Jim McDowell era già stato minacciato alcune volte sia dai lealisti che dai repubblicani e stasera ha accusato gli spacciatori di droga per il suo pestaggio.
McDowell ha domandato: “Cosa ci dice sulla libertà di espressione e sulla libertà di stampa?”

Journalist beaten up in Belfast
Jim McDowell, 60, northern editor of the Dublin-based Sunday World newspaper, was kicked and punched by four men just yards from City Hall.
He was injured in the head, arms, and legs.
The attack happened less than a fortnight after his car was smashed up outside a court in Craigavon, Co Armagh as he attended a hearing involving a number of men charged in connection with the murder of one of his reporters, Martin O’Hagan, who was shot dead by loyalist paramilitaries in Lurgan, Co Armagh in September 2001.
McDowell had been visiting Belfast’s Christmas market in the grounds of City Hall when he was knocked to the ground. Earlier he attended a special reception for James Kelly, a columnist with the Irish News newspaper.
He has been threatened several times before by loyalists and republicans and tonight blamed drugs dealers for the attack. He was badly hurt.
McDowell said: “What does it say about the freedom of expression and the freedom of the Press?”
