Teenager from Scotland admits rioting in Belfast

RiotA teenager who moved from Scotland to escape sectarian tensions became involved in rioting in Belfast, a court has heard.

Craig-Lee Williamson was said to have thrown a stone at police during clashes between factions in the east of the city last month.

The 19-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of riotous behaviour at Castlereagh Place on July 14.

Prosecutors said Williamson, of Bendigo Street, Belfast, tried to hide his identity during the disorder by wearing a football scarf.

Following his arrest he apologised and accepted he should not have thrown stones at police.

Defence solicitor Joe Hillis told Belfast Magistrates Court that Williamson’s family had moved him from Scotland because of sectarian tensions in their area.

Mr Hillis said his client has learning difficulties but did not attempt to make any excuses for his behaviour.

The judge postponed sentencing and Williamson will appear in court next month.
