Gli unionisti contestano la decisione del Consiglio comunale di Craigavon di permettere l’uso di una sala per una riunione di repubblicani
Il leader del gruppo del DUP nel consiglio di Craigavon, Stephen Moutray, ha detto che questa sera l’incontro sarà un oltraggio, non importa se lo svolgimento sarà in una proprietà del Consiglio.
“La gente nordirlandese proverà giustamente avversione rispetto alle opinioni di Duffy e dei suoi sostenitori”, ha detto.
“E’ una strana e macabra logica supportare la posizione adottata da Duffy sui recenti attacchi in Irlanda del Nord.
“Comprendo perché la gente si sentirà oltraggiata dal fatto che Duffy potrà tenere il suo incontro nel loro Community Centre. E’ molto discutibile quanto sia opportuno che tali eventi si svolgano nelle proprietà del Consiglio”.
Moutray dice che vorrebbe contestare le regole che permettono di ospitare nelle proprietà consiliari questi incontri.
“La proprietà del Consiglio è governata da una serie di regole e chiunque intenda affittare tale luogo deve attenersi a tali leggi. Il consiglio possiede molte proprietà che possono essere affittate dalla comunità per molteplici eventi, inclusi gli incontri di partiti politici.
“Comunque, questo evento ha una chiara connotazione. Come leader del gruppo DUP nel Consiglio, proverò ad attuare una profonda revisione delle linee guida che disciplinano le modalità di affitto e di gestione delle strutture stesse””.
Secondo Moutray i sostenitori dei dissidenti repubblicani non hanno nulla da offrire agli elettori e dovrebbero essere contrastati ogni volta.
“Duffy e compagnia intendono distruggere Stormont ed il progresso fatto in Irlanda del Nord. I suoi sostenitori vogliono riportarci nel passato.
“La suggestione di gente che vota per politiche in stile-Duffy è profondamente sbagliata e dovrebbe evidenziare il bisogno per la polizia di prendere una dura posizione contro i dissidenti repubblicani”.
Il Consiglio difende la sua decisione di permettere alla famiglia Duffy di utilizzare i locali di proprietà comunale, affermando che se sono stati utilizzati per scopi politici, potranno adottare ulteriori provvedimenti.
In un comunicato, il Consiglio ha detto: “A chiunque chieda una stanza in qualsiasi struttura del consiglio vengono illustrati i termini e le condizioni d’uso.
“Gli ufficiali consiliari sono stati assicurati che questo incontro non sarà politico e come con tutte le prenotazioni, dobbiamo credere alla parola della gente. Se scopriremo un diverso uso, prenderemo ulteriori provvedimenti”.
Lo scorso mese il Republican Network for Unity (RNU), un’organizzazione che riunisce diversi gruppi repubblicani, ha riferito al News Letter che Duffy si presenterà alle elezioni.
Ciaran Cunningham, membro della sezione di Belfast dell’RNU, ha detto che Duffy sarà un candidato indipendente.
“Colin Duffy intende correre come candidato nelle prossime elezioni europee”, ha comunicato.
“Il programma sarà contro la legge che permette di detenere una persona per 28 giorni e contro l’internamento. Un comitato direttivo è stato approntato per dirigere la campagna elettorale e il Republican Network for Unity sosterrà quel comitato”.
Da allora, comunque, ci sono stati messaggi contrastanti sull’effettiva partecipazione di Duffy alle elezioni.
Colin Duffy ha tempo fino a giovedì per consegnare i documenti di candidatura e il deposito di 5.000 sterline all’Ufficio Elettorale.

Unionist anger at Duffy ‘meeting’
UNIONISTS have hit out at a council’s decision to allow its property to be used by dissident republican supporters.
DUP group leader on Craigavon council Stephen Moutray said there would be outrage at the meeting, never mind it being held on council property.
“The people of Northern Ireland will be rightly repulsed by the views held by Duffy and his supporters,” he said.
“It takes a strange and sick logic to support the stance which Duffy has adopted on the recent attacks in Northern Ireland.
“I understand why people will be outraged that Duffy was able to hold a meeting in their community centre. It is very questionable how appropriate it is for such events to be held in council property.”
Mr Moutray said he would be challenging the rules allowing such a meeting in a council-owned facility.
“Council property is governed by a set of rules and anyone hiring the property must adhere to those rules. The council holds a significant number of facilities which can be hired by the community for a wide variety of purposes, including party political meetings.
“However, this event clearly has very significant connotations. As the DUP group leader in the council, I will be seeking a thorough review of the guidelines governing how facilities are hired and managed.”
He said supporters of the dissident republican had nothing to offer any voters and they should be opposed at every turn.
“Duffy and Co want to destroy Stormont and the progress we have made in Northern Ireland. His supporters want to drag us back to the past.
“The suggestion of people voting for Duffy-style politics is deeply worrying and should highlight the need for the police to take a strong stand against dissident republicans.”
The council defended its decision to permit Mr Duffy’s family to use the facilities, saying if they were used for political purposes, they could take further action.
In a statement, the council said: “Anyone booking a room at any of the council’s facilities is made very aware of our terms and conditions.
“Council officials have been reassured that this meeting will not be political and as with all other bookings, we have to take people’s word on this. If we find out to the contrary, then we can take further action”.
Last month, the Republican Network for Unity (RNU), an umbrella organisation representing a number of dissident republican groups, told the News Letter that Mr Duffy would stand for election.
Ciaran Cunningham, an RNU member from Belfast, said that Mr Duffy would stand as an independent candidate.
“Colin Duffy intends to stand as a candidate in the upcoming European elections,” he said.
“He will be standing on an end-28-day-detention ticket and an anti-internment ticket. A steering committee has been set up to direct the election campaign and RNU fully endorses that committee.”
However, since then there have been conflicting messages about whether Mr Duffy will indeed stand.
He has until Thursday to submit nomination papers and a £5,000 deposit to the Electoral Office
