Gordon Brown e Brian Cowen nei colloqui di Belfast

Il primo ministro Gordon Brown e il Taoiseach Brian Cowen sono arrivati in Irlanda del Nord per guidare i colloqui di emergenza volti a salvare il governo di Stormont colpito dalla crisi.

Il drammatico intervento tra i leader britannico e irlandese era stato annunciato in precedenza dopo l’ultimo disperato tentativo non riuscito dello Sinn Fein e del Democratic Unionist Party di trovare un accordo sul trasferimento dei poteri sulla sicurezza.

Tra i timori che i repubblicani possano far crollare le fragili istituzioni – obbligando ad elezioni anticipate – se il DUP non acconsente al trasferimento delle responsabilità sull’ordine pubblico da Londra, i due governi incontreranno entrambi i partiti all’Hillsborough Castle nella Contea di Down.

Brown e Cowen hanno deciso di recarsi nella provincia dopo aver tenuto gli incontri a Downing Street.

“Crediamo che i problemi esistenti riguardo al trasferimento (dei poteri) di polizia e giustizia sono tutti risolvibili”, ha detto Brown.

“Riteniamo sia giusto per l’Irlanda del Nord andare avanti in questa maniera e credere che insieme possiamo assistere al completamento di questi colloqui”.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Irish premier Brian Cowen have arrived in Northern Ireland to lead emergency talks aimed at saving Stormont’s crisis-hit power-sharing government.

The dramatic intervention by the British and Irish leaders was announced earlier after a last-ditch attempt by Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionists to find agreement over the devolution of policing powers failed.

Amid fears that republicans could collapse the fragile institutions – forcing a snap assembly election – if the DUP do not agree to a swift transfer of law and order responsibilities from London, the two governments will meet both parties at Hillsborough Castle in Co Down.

Mr Brown and Mr Cowen decided to fly to the province after holding talks at Downing Street.

“We believe that the problems that exist in devolving policing and justice are soluble problems,” Mr Brown said.

“We believe it is right for Northern Ireland to move forward in this way and we believe that together we can assist in the completion of these talks.”
