Grande protesta repubblicana a Maghaberry

Parenti e amici dei prigionieri di guerra repubblicani a Maghaberry hanno tenuto una grande manifestazione fuori dalla prigione

Almeno 250 persone si sono radunate ai cancelli della prigione di massima sicurezza di Lisburn nel pomeriggio di domenica.

Denunciano il peggioramento delle condizioni di vita dei POW e chiedono la fine delle “strip search” (perquisizioni corporali, Ndt) perché violano i diritti umani dei prigionieri.

Lo scorso agosto, dopo incontri tra il Prison Service e i prigionieri, fu raggiunto un accordo per far cessare le perquisizioni corporali prima delle visite dei familiari e degli avvocati.

Tuttavia nelle ultime settiane circa 15 prigionieri stanno continuando la protesta, dopo che un giudice ha deciso che le strip search sono legali.

David Hyland, consigliere indipendente, ha riferito a Utv che il ministro della Giustizia David Ford sta trattenendo delle informazioni che porterebbero alla conclusione della protesta.

“Il ministro, riteniamo, ha avuto una serie di raccomandazioni che potrebbe chiarirci le cose e far concludere questa protesta”, ha ricordato Hyland.

“Le ha ricevute a gennaio di quest’anno e non ha agito – il grande quesito è: perché?”

In una dichiarazione rilasciata domenica, un portavoce del Prison Service ha affermato: “Il ministro della Giustizia David Ford si è incontrato settimana scorsa con gli assessori, dopo le loro recenti visite nella prigione di Maghaberry.

“Il NI Prison Service continua ad impegnarsi per la piena implementazione e sui principi fondamentali dell’accordo siglato lo scorso agosto”.

Republican protest outside Maghaberry

Relatives of republican inmates at Maghaberry have held a protest outside the jail.

Up to 250 people gathered outside the gates of the high security prison in Lisburn on Sunday afternoon.

They claim conditions for inmates have deteriorated and are calling for an end to strip searches which they say violates their human rights.

Last August, following talks between the NI Prison Service and inmates, an agreement was reached to end random full-body searching before domestic and legal visits.

However, over the last few weeks, around 15 prisoners have been holding their own protest after a judge ruled full body searches in the jail were lawful.

Independent Cllr David Hyland told UTV that Justice Minister David Ford is holding out on information that could bring the protests to an end.

“The minister, we believe, has had a set of recommendations for the assessment which would clarify it for us and bring this protest to an end,” Mr Hyland said

“He has had this since January of this year and he hasn’t acted on it – the big question for us is why.”

In a statement released on Sunday, a Prison Service spokesperson said: “Justice Minister David Ford met with the assessors last week following their recent visit to Maghaberry.

“The NI Prison Service remains committed to the full implementation and fundamental principles of the agreement reached last August.”
