Un gruppo di sostegno per i prigionieri ha tenuto una protesta durante la Maratona di Belfast

I sostenitori dei prigionieri repubblicani si sono radunati in Falls Road e hanno esposto dei cartelli mentre gli atleti passavano.

Il gruppo vuole evidenziare “le inaccettabili condizioni” dei prigionieri repubblicani chiusi nelle carceri nordirlandesi.

In un comunicato, il Northern Ireland Prison Service ha detto che è il proprio dovere fornire le cure a tutti i prigionieri e la scelta se utilizzare le attrezzature è solo dei carcerati.

Tuttavia una dei contestatori, Aine McLaughlin, afferma che suo marito è costretto a restare chiuso in cella per 23 ore al giorno.

La donna ha riferito come durante la protesta di Pasqua, quando i prigionieri repubblicani si barricarono in una mensa della prigione di Maghaberry, furono negati i servizi di base.

“(Le autorità carcerarie) hanno tolto l’elettricità, senza che nessuno lo sapesse, hanno spento il riscaldamento e chiuso la fornitura d’acqua così ci sono molte cose di cui la gente all’esterno non sa nulla” ha aggiunto la McLaughlin.

Dopo la protesta un comunicato del Republican Sinn Fein, collegato alla Continuity IRA, ha affermato che 16 prigionieri avevano preso parte alla protesta nella sala mensa a causa dell’utilizzo di cani anti droga per controllare i visitatori e perché ai prigionieri non era permesso di indossare i Gigli pasquali.

In un comunicato rilasciato oggi, il Prison Service afferma: “L’attuale regime a Maghaberry consiste in esercizi quotidiani e accesso all’istruzionee, alla palestra e al campetto artificiale, alle docce, telefoni e visite in conformità con il diritto legale.

“E’ scelta personale dei detenuti se avvalersi delle offerte del regime carcerario”.

Prisoner group holds Belfast Marathon protest

A prisoner support group has held a protest during the Belfast Marathon.

Supporters of dissident republican inmates gathered on the Falls Road and held up placards as athletes ran by.

The group says it wants to highlight ‘unacceptable conditions’ for republican prisoners being held in jails in Northern Ireland.

In a statement, the NI Prison Service said it was delivering its duty of care to all prisoners and it was their choice whether to avail of facilities.

However, one protestor, Aine McLaughlin, claimed her husband is subjected to lock-up for 23 hours per day.

Barricade

She said that during a protest at Easter when dissident republican prisoners barricaded themselves into a dining room at Maghaberry prison, they had been denied basic amenities.

“They turned off the electric which nobody knows about, turned off the heating, and turned off the water supply so there’s issues there that people on the outside don’t actually know about,” Ms McLaughlin added.

At the time a statement from a group linked to the Continuity IRA said 16 prisoners had taken part in the dining room protest because of the use of sniffer dogs for searching visitors and inmates not being allowed to wear Easter lillies.

In a statement on Monday, the Prison Service said: “The current regime at Maghaberry consists of daily exercise and access to education, the gym and astroturf, showers, telephones and visits in accordance with statutory entitlement.

“It is the personal choice of prisoners whether or not they wish to avail of the regime on offer.”
