Una donna al servizio nella prigione di massima sicurezza è stata colpita a viso, mascella e collo con coperchio di un cibo in scatola e ha perso molto sangue
La guardia carceraria è stata ferita nel corso di un brutale attacco avvenuto all’interno della prigione di Maghaberry.
L’agente di custodia, con due anni di anzianità presso la prigione di massima sicurezza, è rimasta gravemente ferita e ha perso molto sangue mentre i prigionieri la circondavano.
Ha ricevuto cure immediate dalla sua collega, al suo primo giorno a Maghaberry, con cui stavano controllando più di 40 prigionieri uomini.
La donna ferita è stata trasportata all’Ulster Hospital e sarà operata nel pomeriggio.
Una fonte interna alla prigione ha detto: “La giovane guardia ieri ha detto ad un prigioniero di pulire la cella perché era in uno stato pietoso. Lui le ha sputato in faccia e le ha detto di andarsene a quel paese.
“Oggi, quando era nel braccio della prigione, lei gli è passata accanto e lui ha allargato il braccio con in mano quello che crediamo fosse il coperchio di una lattina di cibo, forse una confezione di Fray Bentos o di dimensioni inferiori.
“C’era sangue dappertutto. Lei si è afferrata il collo e il sangue stava uscendo a fiotti e la sua collega ha dato l’allarme e prestato i primi soccorsi.
“I colleghi pensano che abbia perso circa un litro di sangue per le profonde ferite. Un paio di centimetri più in basso e le avrebbe reciso la giugulare, provocandone la morte in pochi minuti.
“Sappiamo che è stata colpita quattro volte e il prigioniero non ha profferito parola mentre l’aggrediva.
“Le due giovani donne stavano controllando 44 prigionieri di classe A; una era in servizio da un giorno e l’altra da 18 mesi. Erano molto vulnerabili e questo attacco dimostra solo ciò che può accadere in un istante.
“È un attacco terribile contro una giovane donna che cerca di fare il suo lavoro in circostanze molto difficili e posso dire che siamo molto fortunati che sia ancora viva.
“Ma ora porterà le cicatrici fisiche e mentali di questo attacco”.
Adrian Smith, presidente dell’Associazione degli Agenti Carcerari in Irlanda del Nord, ha detto: “La donna ha un taglio di oltre 7 centimetri sul collo sotto all’orecchio sinistro. È una ferita abbastanza profonda.
“Chiunque conosce il lavoro difficile e pericoloso che le guardia carcerarie svolgono e diventa sempre più pericoloso con i tagli al bilancio.
“Purtroppo cose come queste accadranno più spesso”.
Un portavoce Prison Service ha dichiarato: “Questo pomeriggio una agente della prigione ha subito un grave infortunio a seguito di un assalto da parte di un prigioniero a Maghaberry.
“Il Prison Service condanna fermamente questo attacco e ha riferito l’accaduto alla PSNI”.
La guardia carceraria questa sera è stata sottoposta a chirurgia plastica per ridurre le ferite.

She was slashed across her face, jaw and neck with lid from food can and bled out rapidly
A female prison officer has been slashed across the face, jaw and neck in a brutal attack inside Maghaberry jail.
The officer, who is understood to have under two years service at the prison, was seriously injured and bled out quickly as prisoners surrounded her.
She was given emergency first aid at the scene by her colleague who had just one day service at the maximum security jail where they were guarding more than 40 male prisoners.
The injured officer was transferred to the Ulster Hospital for surgery this afternoon.
A source at the jail said: “This young officer had told a prisoner yesterday that he needed to tidy his cell as it was in a dreadful state. Yesterday he spat in her face and told her to f*** off.
“Today when she was on the landings, she walked past him and he side-swiped her at arm’s length with what we believe was the lid of a can of food, possibly a Fray Bentos lid or smaller.
“There was blood everywhere. She grabbed her neck and the blood was pouring out and her colleague, an other female, raised the alarm and raced to administer first aid.
“Colleagues estimated she must have lost around two pints of blood to a very deep wound. A couple of centimetres further down her neck and she would have bled out of her jugular and died within minutes.
“We understand she was hit four times in total and the prisoner did not speak as he attacked her.
“The two young women looking after 44 category-A maximum security inmates, one with a day’s service and the other with around 18 months’ service. They were very vulnerable and this attack just shows what can happen in an instant.
“It is a dreadful attack on a young woman trying to do her job under very difficult circumstances and I can say we feel very lucky tonight that she is still alive.
“But now she will carry the physical and mental scars of this attack.”
Adrian Smith, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Prison Officers’ Association, said: “The woman has a three-inch gash below her left ear on the neck, it’s a pretty deep wound.
“Anybody knows the difficult and dangerous job that prison officers do and it’s getting more and more dangerous with cuts to prison service budget and staffing levels.
“Unfortunately things like this will happen more often.”
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “A prison officer has suffered a serious injury following an assault by a prisoner in Maghaberry this afternoon.
“The Prison Service utterly condemns this attack and has referred the incident to the PSNI.”
It is understood the prisoner officer is due to undergo plastic surgery to her injuries tonight.
