Adesso i gruppi armati repubblicani, secondo la polizia, avrebbero la capacità di far esplodere gli ordigni tramite comandi a distanza.
L’ordigno da 600 libbre (circa 270 kg) ritrovato dieci giorni fa nei dintorni di Newry avrebbe potuto esplodere se qualcuno in zona avesse azionato un trasmettitore, dicono i rapporti.
L’Assistant Chief Constable della PSNI Drew Harris ha riferito al Belfast Telegraph che la tecnologia in questione è un “passo in avanti” per i repubblicani.
La polizia aveva già detto che l’ordigno posizionato in un furgoncino Citroen Berlingo bianco, notato da un membro della popolazione, era “pronto a esplodere”.
Harris ha aggiunto che era stato progettato per uccidere e doveva essere fatto esplodere con un trasmettitore a distanza.
“Chiunque si fosse trovato vicino a quella bomba, se fosse esplosa, non sarebbe sopravvissuto”, ha dichiarato Harris.

Dissident republican groups now have the capability to detonate bombs by remote control, police chiefs believe.
A 600lb device found on the outskirts of Newry a week and a half ago could have been set off by someone in the area with a transmitter, according to reports.
Assistant PSNI Chief Constable Drew Harris told this newspaper that the technology involved is a “step up” for the terrorists.
Police had already said the device in a white Citroen Berlingo van, which was spotted by a member of the public, was “ready to go”.
Mr Harris added that it was designed to kill and was to be detonated with a remote transmitter.
“Anyone close to that bomb, had it exploded, would not have survived,” Mr Harris stated.
