Geoff Kerr, 60 anni, consulente finanziario e membro dell’Ulster Unionist Party, è stato assassinato sulla soglia di casa in Lylehill Road a Templepatrick lunedì sera.
La scorsa notte l’investigatore che guida le indagini ha descritto l’omicidio come “freddo e calcolato”.
L’ispettore Jonathan Roberts ha detto di escludere il coinvolgimento dei dissidenti repubblicani ma di avere “ampie vedute” riguardo il movente.
Roberts, operante nella stazione della PSNI di North Queen Street, ha respinto le speculazioni che parlavano di un errore di identità o di una rapina finita male.
Ha riferito al Belfast Telegraph: “La scorsa notte (lunedì) due uomini hanno forzato il loro ingresso nell’abitazione. Erano travestiti da fattorini di un take-away cinese e hanno sparato a Kerr provocando ferite letali.
“Stiamo tenendo la mente aperta circa il movente ma siamo soddisfatti di poter affermare che i dissidenti repubblicani non siano coinvolti.
“Stiamo ancora esaminando le circostanze della morte e non posso commentare ciò che accadde esattamente o quela fosse il movente”.
Kerr ha vissuto e lavorato nella zona di Ballymena per molti anni, dove apparteneva ad un circolo per il tiro a segno.
Al momento degli spari, sua moglie Sally ed uno dei quattro figli erano a casa. E’ stato stabilito che Kerr aprì la porta ai suoi assassini, quindi venne sopraffatto e costretto a rientrare in casa intorno alle 21.55.
Nel frattempo una vettura, ritenuta quella utilizzata per l’omicidio è stata ritrovata abbandonata e data alle fiamme poco fuori Glenavy, a circa 15 chilometri dalla scena del crimine.
Ha aggiunto l’ispettore Roberts: “Chiedo aiuto a chiunque abbia sospetti su chi potrebbe avere eseguito tale omicidio oppure è certo della partecipazione.
“E chiediamo informazioni su una BMW argento o di colore scuro, targata WIB 6610, che potrebbe essere coinvolta in questo incidente. Questa vettura è stata trovata in fiamme in Ballyminymore Road, poco fuori Glenavy, e vorremmo sapere se qualcuno ha visto e può darci informazioni sui suoi spostamenti di ieri”.
Un’apposita stanza per le indagini è stata creata nella stazione di polizia di North Queen Street a Belfast.
L’ispettore Roberts ha detto che la risposta della gente è stata “eccellente” ma chiede ancora aiuto da parte di chi può avere informazioni importanti.
“C’è stata un’eccellente risposte ma abbiamo bisogno che la gente si faccia avanti e ci aiuti, fornendo prove che potranno portare all’arresto e alla conseguenza presenza in tribunale di queste persone”, ha aggiunto.
Analisi legali sono state eseguite sul luogo dell’omicidio per tutta la giornata di ieri e si pensa continuino per altri giorni. Sul corpo di Kerr è stato portato in ospedale per l’autopsia.
Killers posed as take-away delivery men
Geoff Kerr (60), a financial adviser and member of the Ulster Unionist Party, was shot dead on the doorstep of his home at Lylehill Road in Templepatrick on Monday night.
Last night a senior detective leading the murder investigation described the killing as “cold and calculated”.
Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Roberts said he had ruled out dissident republican involvement but was keeping an “open mind” about a motive.
The PSNI officer, operating out of North Queen Street station, declined to be drawn on speculation that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity or a robbery gone wrong.
He told the Belfast Telegraph: “Last night (Monday) two men forced their way into the house. They were under the pretence of being Chinese take-away delivery men and Mr Kerr was shot and sustained fatal injuries.
“We are keeping an open mind as to the motive but we are satisfied at this stage that there is nothing to suggest that dissident republicans were involved.
“We are still examining the circumstances of it and can’t comment as to exactly what happened or what the motive for this was.”
Mr Kerr had lived and worked in the Ballymena area for many years, where he was also a member of a gun club.
At the time of the shooting, his wife Sally and one of his four sons were at home. It is understood Mrs Kerr answered the door to the gunmen and was overpowered as they forced their way into the property at about 9.55pm.
Meanwhile a car, believed to have been used in the murder was found abandoned and burnt out close to Glenavy — about 10 miles from the scene.
Added Detective Chief Inspector Roberts: “I am appealing for information from anybody in the community who has any suspicions as to who may have been involved or indeed knows who was involved.
“And we are appealing for information about a silver or dark coloured BMW, WIB 6610, which may have been involved in this incident. This vehicle was found burnt out at Ballyminymore Road outside Glenavy and we are appealing for information from anybody who may have seen this car yesterday.”
A major incident room has been set up at North Queen Street PSNI station in Belfast.
Chief Inspector Roberts said the public response had been “excellent” but urged anyone with information to come forward.
“So far there has been an excellent response but we need people to step forward and assist us and provide us with evidence that will lead to making arrests that will put people before the court,” he added.
Forensic examinations were carried out at the murder scene throughout yesterday and are expected to continue for several days. Mr Kerr’s body will also have to be sent for a post mortem examination.
