L’agente penitenziario è stato colpito a morte nei pressi di Lurgan
David Black, guardia carceraria di Cookstown, è la trentesima vittima tra gli ufficiali del Prison Service dal 1974.
La guardia carceraria si stava recando alla prigione di massima sicurezza di Maghaberry – dove i prigionieri repubblicani stanno tenendo una dirty protest per contestare il duro regime cui sono sottoposti.
Si trovava alla guida di una Audi A4 nera (targata HHZ 1560), quando una Toyota Camry blu scuro targata Dublino (targa 94 D 50997) si è accostata e dall’interno hanno iniziato a sparare.
L’auto di Black ha cambiato direzione ed è finita in un canale di scolo accanto alla carreggiata.
La polizia ha esaminato la scena e sta indagando su una vettura – ritenuta la Toyota Camry – trovata bruciata a Lurgan.
Gli investigatori sostengono che durante l’attacco Black ha subito “ferite molto gravi e mortali provocate da armi da fuoco”. Verrà effettuata l’autopsia sul cadavere dell’agente penitenziario.
Matt Baggott ha dichiarato: “Questa mattina, una guardia carceraria – David Black – la cui professione è semplicemente quella di tenere la gente al sicuro, è stato brutalmente assassinato mentre si recava al lavoro.
“State certi che la PSNI farà tutto il possibile per assicurare i responsabili alla giustizia.
“Vorrei chiedere a tutti di venirci subito dietro nell’inchiesta omicidio mentre le ore e i giorni trascorrono. Questo è un attacco contro tutta la popolazione e abbiamo bisogno del pieno sostegno di tutti”.
L’omicidio di David Black è stato condannato all’unisono da Peter Robinson e Martin McGuinness.
“In questo momento, i nostri pensieri e preghiere sono con la famiglia del defunto e condanniamo questo omicidio nei termini più forti possibili” hanno affermato il primo ministro nordirlandese ed il suo vice in una dichiarazione congiunta.
“Non ci può essere alcuna giustificazione per questo brutale attacco, avvenuto mentre quest’uomo andava a svolgere i suoi compiti quotidiani”.
Robinson e McGuinness hanno aggiunto: “Le azioni di questo tipo non hanno posto nella società e chi ha eseguito questo omicidio non hanno nulla di positivo con cui contribuire e rifiutiamo di lasciarci distogliere dalla costruzione di un futuro migliore e di pace per tutti dalle persone che stanno dietro a questo attacco.
“Facciamo appello a chiunque abbia informazioni su questo omicidio affinché contatti la PSNI”.
Il ministro della Giustizia David Ford ha definito “orribile” il delitto.
“In via preliminare, desidero esprimere la mia più profonda solidarietà alla famiglia e ai colleghi dell’agente penitenziario”, ha detto.
“Si tratta di un omicidio orribile, per il quale non ci può esserci alcuna giustificazione, e sarà giustamente condannato da tutta l’Irlanda del Nord”.
Ha aggiunto Ford: “Principalmente, si tratta di una tragedia umana. Un uomo ha perso la vita questa mattina e una famiglia è in lutto per la perdita del loro caro. I miei pensieri sono anche con tutta la grande famiglia del Prison Service.
“Abbiamo bisogno di rispondere a questo atto orribile portando i responsabili davanti alla giustizia”, conclude il ministro della Giustizia.
“Qualcuno stamattina si è alzato dal letto per fare nulla di insolito, se non prendere la propria auto per andare a lavorare, ed è stato brutalmente assassinato mentre percorreva l’autostrada”, ha commentato il leader dell’UUP Mike Nesbitt.
“Abbiamo sentito che c’è una macchina bruciata a nord di Lurgan e quindi questo sembra avere le caratteristiche di un assassinio terroristico”.
Jeffrey Donaldson, parlamentare DUP per Lagan Valley, ha aggiunto: “Sappiamo da tempo che c’è una forte minaccia da parte dei repubblicani ed esiste un forte gruppo repubblicano nella zona di Lurgan.
“La gente sarà sconvolta da questo incidente e i nostri pensieri e preghiere sono con la famiglia dell’uomo che è stato assassinato”.
Il suo collega di partito Nigel Dodds ha riportato la notizia del fatale attacco alla Camera dei Comuni.
“Questo vile omicidio evidenzia che la battaglia contro il terrorismo per la pace e la democrazia continua in Irlanda del Nord”, ha detto il falco unionista.
“Settimana prossima segna il venticinquesimo anniversario del massacro del Poppy Day a Enniskillen. Purtroppo, ci sono ancora persone che vogliono riportare l’Ulster nel buio della disperazione e della morte.
“Non bisogna permettergli di avere successo. Chiunque abbia informazioni deve aiutare la polizia a rintracciare questi assassini e assicurarli alla giustizia”.
Dolores Kelly, la parlamentare SDLP per Upper Bann, ha detto che l’indagine della polizia deve essere “rapida e accurata”.
“Questo incidente è disgustoso e inquietante, per non dire che ci ricorda i peggiori momenti degli ultimi 40 anni”, ha affermato.
“Le forze oscure che stanno dietro questo disgustoso omicidio – che porta devastazione nella vita delle persone colpite – non rappresentano la stragrande maggioranza delle persone in Irlanda del Nord.
“E non otterranno nulla togliendo una vita – qualsiasi vita”.
John O’Dowd, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, ha detto: “l’attacco di questa mattina sulla M1 ha portato ad una morte del tutto inutile una guardia carceraria.
“Non risolverà nulla, né all’interno delle carceri né nella società più ampia. Non è parte di una strategia. Tutto ciò che ha ottenuto è di provocare il lutto in una famiglia.
“I responsabili, o coloro che agiscono come loro portavoce politici, hanno bisogno di dare spiegazioni alla comunità”.
L’attacco armato giunge meno di 24 ore dopo che il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord Theresa Villiers ha detto a Westminster che gli attacchi nelle Sei Contee sono diminuiti del 20% nel corso del 2012.
Una settimana fa la possibilità di un attacco repubblicano in Inghilterra era stata declassata a “moderata”.
“Condanno assolutamente questo vile attentato” ha riferito la Villiers.
“I pensieri e la più profonda partecipazione di tutti noi sono con i familiari, gli amici e colleghi della guardia carceraria uccisa.
“I governi britannico e irlandese, l’Esecutivo, la PSNI e la Garda – e soprattutto il popolo dell’Irlanda del Nord – continueranno a lavorare insieme per far sì che coloro che perseguono i loro obiettivi con la violenza non abbiano successo”.
Kate Carroll, la vedova dell’agente PSNI Stephen Carroll ucciso dalla Continuity IRA nel 2009, ha detto a UTV di aver sempre temuto un nuovo attacco contro un membro delle forze di sicurezza.
“Non riesco nemmeno a immaginare come queste persone potranno sentirsi, ma, dal mio punto di vista, è stata la notizia peggiore che abbia mai ricevuto in vita mia”, ha aggiunto.
La M1 è chiusa in entrambe le direzioni tra le uscite J10 di Lurgan e l’uscita J11 (il bivio con la M12 per Portadown).
Il traffico viene deviato sulla A3 attraverso Lurgan e Craigavon. In direzione ovest le auto possono rientrare sulla M1 all’uscita J11, mentre per chi va verso est il rientro è previsto all’uscita J10.
L’autostrada è destinata a rimanere chiuso per la maggior parte di oggi e gli automobilisti devono aspettarsi ritardi.

Prison officer named after M1 murder
The serving prison officer who died after his car left the M1 motorway near Lurgan when gunmen opened fire on it has been named.
David Black, who is in his 50s and from Cookstown, is the 30th prison officer to be killed in Northern Ireland since 1974.
The victim is understood to have been travelling to work at Maghaberry high-security prison – where protests by dissident republican inmates have been ongoing, at about 7.30am on Thursday.
He was driving a black Audi A4 (registration HHZ 1560), when a dark-blue Toyota Camry with a Dublin registration (94 D 50997) pulled up alongside and a number of shots were fired.
Mr Black’s car immediately veered off the road and into a deep drainage ditch.
Police have examined the scene and are also investigating a car – believed to be the Dublin reg Camry – burnt-out in Lurgan.
At this stage, officers believe Mr Black sustained “very serious and fatal gunshot wounds” in the attack. A post-mortem is due to be carried out.
“This morning, a prison officer – David Black – whose profession is simply to keep people safe, was brutally murdered on his way to work,” PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said.
“Please be assured that the Police Service of Northern Ireland will do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.
“I would ask everybody to get right behind the murder investigation as the hours and days unfold. This is an attack on all people and we need the full support of everyone.”
The father-of-two’s murder has been condemned by the First and deputy First Ministers.
“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and we condemn this murder in the strongest possible terms,” Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness said in a joint statement.
“There can be no justification for this brutal attack as this man was going about his daily life.”
The First and deputy First Ministers added: “Actions like this have no place in society and those who carried out this murder have nothing positive to contribute and we refuse to let the people behind this attack divert us from building a better and peaceful future for everyone.
“We appeal to anyone with any information on this murder to contact the PSNI.”
Justice Minister David Ford branded the murder “horrific”.
“At the outset, I want to express my deepest sympathy to the family and colleagues of the murdered prison officer,” he said.
“This is a horrific murder, for which there can be no justification, and it will be rightly condemned by all across Northern Ireland.”
Mr Ford added: “At its very core, this is a human tragedy. A man has lost his life this morning and a family are grieving the loss of their loved one. My thoughts are also with the wider Prison Service family.
“We need to respond to this horrific act by bringing those responsible to justice.”
“Somebody who got out of bed this morning to do nothing more unusual than to get in his car and go to work has been brutally murdered as he drove along the motorway,” UUP leader Mike Nesbitt said.
“We’re hearing that there’s a car burnt out in north Lurgan and so it does seem to have the hallmarks of a terrorist assassination.”
Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP MP for Lagan Valley, added: “We’ve known for some time now that there has been a high level threat from dissident republicans and there’s a very strong dissident republican unit in the Lurgan area.
“People will be shocked at this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this man who has been murdered.”
His party colleague Nigel Dodds has raised the issue of the fatal attack in the House of Commons.
“This dastardly murder highlights that the battle against terrorism and the fight for peace and democracy continues in Northern Ireland,” he said.
“Next week marks the 25th anniversary of the Poppy Day massacre in Enniskillen. Sadly, there are still people who want to plunge Ulster into the darkness and depths of despair and death.
“They must not be allowed to succeed anyone with information must help the police track down these killers and bring them to justice.”
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said that the police must be permitted to conduct a “swift and accurate” investigation.
“This incident is sickening and disturbing, not to mention reminiscent of the worst moments of the last 40 years,” she said.
“The dark forces behind this disgusting murder – which will wreak devastation in the lives of those affected – do not represent the overwhelming majority of people in the North of Ireland.
“And they will not achieve anything by taking a life – any life.”
Sinn Féin Upper Bann MLA John O’Dowd said: “This morning’s attack on the M1 has resulted in an utterly pointless death of a prison officer.
“It will resolve nothing either within the prisons or in wider society. It is not part of any strategy or campaign. All it has done is to plunge a family into grief.
“The people responsible, or those who act as their political spokespeople, need to explain themselves to the community.”
The gun attack comes less than 24 hours after Secretary of State Theresa Villiers told a Westminster committee that dissident attacks in Northern Ireland had fallen by 20% so far this year.
It’s also a week after the threat of attack in Great Britain was downgraded to moderate.
“I utterly condemn this cowardly and evil attack,” Ms Villiers said on Thursday.
“The thoughts and deepest sympathy of us all are with the family, friends and colleagues of the murdered prison officer.
“The British and Irish Governments, the Executive, the PSNI and Garda – and above all the people of Northern Ireland – will continue to work together to ensure that those who pursue their aims by violence will not succeed.”
Kate Carroll, the widow of PSNI Constable Stephen Carroll who was shot dead by dissidents in 2009, told UTV that she had feared another attack against a member of security forces would happen.
“I can’t even imagine how those people are going to feel but, from my perspective, it was the worst news I had ever been given in my life,” she added.
The M1 is closed in both directions between J10 Lurgan and J11 (the M12 turnoff for Portadown).
Traffic is being diverted via the A3 through Lurgan and Craigavon, with westbound traffic rejoining at J11 and eastbound traffic rejoining at J10.
The motorway is likely to remain closed for most of today and motorists should expect long delays.
