Il primo ministro Peter Robinson ha respinto le dicerie secondo cui avrebbe evitato di allarmare il comitato di controllo quando sua moglie infranse le regole parlamentari per aiutare il suo giovane amante
Ma la parlamentare di Strangford deve affrontare le accuse di non aver dichiarato il suo interesse finanziario nell’affare nonostante fosse seduta nel consiglio locale che nel 2008 approvò la proposta del suo giovane amante.
In un comunicato, il Castlereagh Council ha detto che verrà compiuta una completa indagine sui fatti.
“Durante un incontro tra i partiti tenutosi nella mattinata, l’Acting Chief Executive è stato incaricato di preparare un’indagine.
“Nell’interesse di un buon governo, il Consiglio terrà costantemente aggiornato il revisore dei conti di questo processo”, dichiara il comunicato.
Il documentario di BBC ha anche affermato che Peter Robinson venne a conoscenza della situazione ma non avvertì gli appropriati organismi delle presunte infrazioni alle regole.
Venerdì Robinson ha detto: “Respingo completamente il tentativo di Spotlight di implicarmi tramite insinuazioni e allusione.
“Sono più sgomento dell’inserimento in quel programma di commenti e conclusioni raggiunte senza il supporto dei fatti.
“Mentre ho saputo da Spotlight per la prima volta alcuni presunti aspetti della relazione di mia moglie e delle sue disposizioni finanziarie, mi difenderò risolutamente dagli attacchi contro la mia persona e contesto qualsiasi accusa di comportamento sbagliato. Alla fine, parlerò con i media oggi, dopo aver preso adeguate misure legali”.
Reazioni
“Ci incontreremo e guarderemo le implicazioni”, ha affermato.
“Iris ha fatto cose chiaramente sbagliate. Questo è qualcosa da cui non si può tornare indietro. Mi aspetto ci sarà una risposta del partito.
“Lei ha colpito la sua famiglia e le persone che l’hanno sostenuta e che hanno condiviso le idee da lei espresse.
“Per molti aspetti, Peter è una vittima in tutto ciò. Ma era a conoscenza del cambio di proprietà dei soldi e avrebbe dovuto raccontarlo alla House of Commons“.
Anche il vice primo ministro Martin McGuinness ha espresso il suo shock alle rivelazioni economiche riportate dal programma.
“Ho chiesto un incontro urgente con il Primo Ministro per discutere le implicazioni per l’Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (Ufficio del Primo Ministro e del Vice Primo Ministro)”, ha affermato.
Il leader dell’UUP, Sir Reg Empey, ha detto a UTV che sarebbe “intollerabile” se la signora Robinson non si dimettesse da parlamentare, sia a Westminster che a Stormont, ed anche dal ruolo di consigliere comunale.
“Il giorno non può chiudersi senza le sue dimissioni da tutte queste posizioni, penso sia il minimo che la gente sia aspetta e si meriti”, afferma.
“Credo sarebbe intollerabile per lei ricevere uno stipendio pubblico e i rimborsi tra ora e l’estate, e ritengo che lei abbia bisogno di essere fuori da questi uffici pubblici subito”.
Secondo Jim Allister, falco unionista e responsabile del TUV, sia la posizione di Iris che quella di Peter Robinson sono “assolutamente insostenibili”.
“Credo che lui abbia perso senza dubbio l’autorità morale di governare e dovrebbe dimettersi”, afferma a UTV Allister.
“Cinquanta mila sterline pagate da due imprenditori dietro richiesta… Non c’è in corso un’inchiesta su questa storie e sulla facilità con cui questi imprenditori hanno pagato questi soldi ad un politico?” ha chiesto Allister.
Un portavoce di Gordon Brown ha riferito: “Per il primo ministro (britannico) completare la devolution è estremamente importante e Peter Robinson è molto addentro a quel processo.
“Ovviamente ci sono problemi personali di cui ha parlato Peter Robinon, ma il primo ministro non intende commentare”.
Iris Robinson, che ha annunciato il mese scorso di voler lasciare la vita politica a causa di problemi di depressione, ha rilasciato un importante comunicato mercoledì dove ha ammesso la relazione rivelando che, schiacciata dal senso di colpa, aveva provato a suicidarsi a marzo dello scorso anno.

Robinson under pressure over loan
First Minister Peter Robinson has hit out at claims that he failed to alert watchdogs when his wife allegedly broke parliamentary rules to help her young lover.
But the Strangford MP faces allegations that she did not declare her financial interest in the business despite sitting on the local council which awarded the tender to her teenage lover in 2008.
In a statement, Castlereagh Council said a full investigation will be carried out.
“At a cross party meeting held this morning, the Acting Chief Executive was instructed to instigate a full investigation.
“In the interests of good governance, the Council will keep the local government auditor fully informed of this process,” the statement read.
The BBC documentary also alleged Peter Robinson became aware of the situation but did not alert the appropriate watchdog bodies that his wife may have broken rules.
On Friday Mr Robinson said: “I completely reject BBC Spotlight’s attempt to implicate me by insinuation and innuendo.
“I am even more appalled by the inclusion on that programme of comments and conclusions made without any supporting facts – indeed with facts in the programme which support a contrary position.
“While I have learned from Spotlight for the first time some alleged aspects of my wife’s affair and her financial arrangements, I will be resolutely defending attacks on my character and contesting any allegations of wrongdoing. To that end, I will be addressing the media today after I have taken legal advice.”
Reaction
“We will have to meet as a team and look at the implications”, he said.
“Iris has done things that are clearly wrong. That’s something that can’t be undone. I expect there will be a response from the party on it.”
“She hurt her family and people who have supported her and who have supported views that she expressed.”
“In many respects, Peter is a victim in this. But he was aware money changed hands and he should have reported that to the House of Commons.”
Sinn Fein Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness also expressed his shock at the financial revelations made in the programme.
“I have sought an urgent meeting with the First Minister to discuss the implications for the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister,” he said.
Leader of the UUP, Sir Reg Empey told UTV that it would be “intolerable” if Mrs Robinson did not resign as MP, MLA and councillor immediately.
“The day cannot close without her removing herself from all of those positions, forthwith I think that would be the minimum that the public would expect and require,” he said.
“I think it would be intolerable for her to be receiving a public salary and expenses between now and the summer, and I think she needs to be out of all these public offices by close of play today.”
TUV leader Jim Allister said both Iris and Peter Robinson’s positions were “utterly untenable”.
“I think he has undoubtedly lost the moral authority to govern and he should resign”, Jim Allister told UTV.
“Fifty thousand pounds paid over from the ask from two developers… Is there not a course for investigation into what is the history and ease with which developers paid such money to a politician?” he asked.
Gordon Brown’s spokesman said: “The Prime Minister’s view is that completing the devolution process is extremely important and Peter Robinson is very closely involved in that.
“Obviously there are personal issues that Peter Robinson has spoken about, but that is not for the Prime Minister to comment on.”
Mrs Robinson, who announced last month that she was stepping down from public life because of mental health problems, issued a stunning statement on Wednesday admitting the affair and revealing that, wracked by guilt, she had tried to take her own life in March last year.
