Ian Paisley ricoverato in terapia intensiva

L’ex leader DUP ed ex primo ministro Ian Paisley Senior è ricoverato persso l’Ulster Hospital di Dundonald

L’ottantacinquenne unionista viene curato presso il reparto di terapia intensiva nell’ospedale di East Belfast, dopo aver avuto problemi cardiaci nella giornata di domenica.

In un comunicato rilasciato lunedì pomeriggio la moglie, la baronessa Eileen Paisley, ha confermato che Ian Paisley, nominato Lord Bannside, viene curato presso l’Ulster Hospital.

La baronessa ha chiesto che “la privacy della famiglia sia rispettata in questo momento difficile”.

A dicembre il reverendo Paisley eseguì l’ultimo sermone da moderatore della Free Presbyterian Church.

In un’intervista rilasciata all’epoca, disse del suo ministero: “Direi che la media di un uomo che ha buona salute dovrebbe essere di circa 25-30 anni, ma io ho doppiato tale cifra, quindi devo aver fatto molto bene!”

Alla domanda su quale ruolo sentiva più importante, se quello politico o quello di uomo di chiesa, il reverendo Paisley rispose di voler essere ricordato come un “uomo del vangelo”.

Disse a Utv: “Oh, davvero come uomo del vangelo. Il fatto che sia sceso in politica è stato il risultato della fede che predicavo”.

Dopo il ritiro sia dalla chiesa – di cui fu fondatore – che dalla vita politica, aveva in mente di scrivere la sua autobiografia.

Nel suo periodo di massimo splendore, il reverendo Paisley fu un fiero oppositore della condivisione del potere con i nazionalistri e repubblicani in Irlanda del Nord.

Tuttavia venne eletto primo ministro nel maggio 2007, con Martin McGuinness dello Sinn Féin in qualità di vice primo ministro.

I due uomini svilupparono una notevole amicizia – sia a livello personale che professionale – che valse loro il soprannome di “Chuckle Brothers”.

Paisley Snr in intensive care

Former DUP leader Ian Paisley Snr has been admitted to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

UTV understands that the 85-year-old Rev Paisley is being treated in the intensive care unit in the hospital in east Belfast, after suffering from heart problems on Sunday.

In a statement on Monday afternoon Ian Paisley’s wife, Baroness Paisley, confirmed her husband, former First Minister Lord Bannside, is currently being treated in the Ulster Hospital.

She requested that “the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time”.

In December Rev Paisley preached his final sermon after standing down as moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church.

In an interview with UTV at the time, he said of his ministry: “I would say the average of a man that has good health should do about 25-30 years, but I have doubled that so I have done very well!”

Asked whether he felt his mantle as a politician or a churchman has been the most important, Rev Paisley said he wished to be remembered as a “gospel man”.

He said: “Oh by long and far the gospel man. Really the fact that I was in politics came as a result of the faith that I preached.”

After retiring from both church and political life, he planned to write his autobiography.

In his heyday, Rev Paisley was a fierce opponent of sharing government powers with nationalists and republicans in Northern Ireland.

However, he was elected First Minister in May 2007 with Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister.

The two men went on to develop a remarkable friendship – both on a personal and professional level – which earned them the nickname the “Chuckle Brothers”.
