Il Barone Empey di Shandon nella City and County Borough of Belfast ha occupato il seggio tra le fila dei Conservative mentre i Pari iniziavano un’altra potenziale maratona per discutere le modifiche al sistema di voto ed il taglio del numero dei parlamentari.
All’inizio di questa settimana si sono riuniti per tutta la notte, fiendo solamente alle 14:00 del giorno successivo.
In una cerimonia di cinque minuti il sostenitore della politica dell’Ulster, avvolto nell’ ermellino, è stato formalmente introdotto alla Upper House (Camera Alta), insieme ad altri 54 nuovi Pari annunciati a novembre.
Mentre faceva il giuramento di fedeltà alla Regina era affiancato dal suo predecessore Lord Trimble, un Pari dei Tory, e da Lord Rogan, che siede come membro dell’Ulster Unionist.
Lord Empey ha domandato una più democratica Camera dei Lord e ha detto che intende continuare a lavorare per l’Irlanda del Nord anche nel suo nuovo ruolo.
Nato a East Belfast, ha studiato alla Queen’s University, dove fu coinvolto nell’unionismo ed è stato consigliere, sindaco della città, parlamentare e ministro, prima di prendere il timone dell’UUP.
Durante la sua leadership quinquennale, Lord Empey ha guidato il suo partito in quello che sarebbe divenuto un patto fallimentare con i Conservatives prima di rinunciare alla guida del partito subito dopo le ultime elezioni per Westminster.
Ieri è stato formalmente presentato alla House of Lords insieme al liberaldemocratico Monroe Palmer.

Baron Empey of Shandon in the City and County Borough of Belfast joined the Conservative benches as peers geared up for another potential marathon session debating changes to the voting system and cutting the number of MPs.
Earlier this week they sat through the night, only finishing at 2pm the next day.
In a five-minute ceremony the stalwart of Ulster politics, draped in ermine, was formally introduced to the Upper House, one of a batch of 54 new working peers announced in November.
As he took the oath of allegiance to the Queen he was flanked by his UUP predecessor Lord Trimble, a Tory peer, and Lord Rogan, who sits as an Ulster Unionist member of the Lords.
Lord Empey has called for a more democratic House of Lords and has said he intends to continue working for Northern Ireland in his new role.
Born in east Belfast, he went to Queen’s University where he became involved in unionism and was a councillor, the city’s lord mayor, MLA and minister, before taking the UUP helm.
During his five-year stint, Lord Empey steered his party into what would be a failed pact with the Conservatives before resigning as party leader soon after the election.
Yesterday he was formally introduced to the House of Lords with Liberal Democrat Monroe Palmer.
