La camera ardente per il cardinale Daly si terrà nella cattedrale di St. Peter a Belfast. Il suo feretro sarà sepolto ad Armagh, martedì, nella cattedrale di San Patrizio
Il cardinale, 92 anni, è scomparso ieri sera presso il Belfast City Hospital dove era in cura dopo essersi gravemente ammalato al cuore cinque giorni fa.
Politici e leader delle chiese hanno ricordato il cardinale Daly, che fu Arcivescovo di Armagh e Primate of All Ireland dal 1990 al 1996.
I leader politici hanno lodato il contributo del cardinale Daly nell’alimentare il processo di pace e migliorare le relazioni comunitarie in Irlanda del Nord.
L’attuale Primate cattolico, il cardinale Sean Brady, ha detto che “in un momento critico e problematico della storia irlandese, fu profetico nella sua convinzione che la pace sarebbe stata costruita sulla giustizia, la mutua comprensione ed il rispetto per le tradizioni e le aspirazioni degli altri”.
“Fu fermo e coraggioso nel suo fermo rifiuto della violenza come mezzo per raggiungere i fini politici”.
Il Taoiseach (primo ministro irlandese) Brian Cowen ha detto che il cardinale Daly fornì un grande contributo sia alla chiesa cattoliche che alla società irlandese.
Il corpo del cardinale giungerà presso la cattedrale di St. Peter domani a mezzogiorno, quando verrà celebrata la messa e il corpo sarà esposto fino alle 21.
Domenica l’attuale vescovo di Down e Connor, Noel Tranor, terrà una funzione alle 15, prima che il corpo del cardinale venga spostato nella cattedrale di San Patrizio in Armagh, la capitale ecclesiastica d’Irlanda, dove la cerimonia funebre avrà luogo martedì alle 12.
Il cardinale Daly nacque nella Contea di Antrim. Fu apertamente critico nei confronti della violenza, e particolarmente di quella dell’IRA.
Daly prese il posto di Primate cattolico all’età di 73 anni e fu una scelta sorprendente, ma divenne una personalità molto importante.
Si è ritirato nell’ottobre 1996, quando fu sostituito dal cardinale Brady, e ritornò a studiare filosofia.
Il cardinale Daly era riconosciuto come autore prolifico e molti suoi scritti filosofici e libri sono stati pubblicati.

Cardinal Daly to lie in state in Belfast
The 92-year-old retired Cardinal died last night in Belfast City Hospital where he was being treated after falling seriously ill with a heart condition five days ago.
Politicians and church leaders paid tribute to Cardinal Daly who was Archbishop of Armagh and Catholic Primate of all Ireland from 1990 until 1996.
Leading politicians have praised Cardinal Daly for helping to nurture the peace process and improve community relations in Northern Ireland.
The current Catholic Primate, Cardinal Sean Brady said ‘at a critical and troubled time in Irish history, he was prophetic in his conviction that lasting peace can only be built on justice, mutual understanding and respect for the traditions and aspirations of others.’
He continued ‘he was firm and courageous in his absolute rejection of violence as a means of achieving political ends.’
Taoiseach Brian Cowen, said Cardinal Daly had made a huge contribution to both the Catholic Church and civic society in Ireland.
The Cardinal’s body will arrive at St Peter’s Cathedral in the west of the city at noon tomorrow where Mass will be celebrated and he will lie in state until 9pm.
On Sunday the current Bishop of Down and Connor, Noel Treanor, will lead a prayer service at 3pm before the Cardinal’s body is taken to St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh, Ireland’s ecclesiastical capital, where his funeral Mass will take place at noon on Tuesday.
Cardinal Daly was born in Co Antrim, was an outspoken critic of violence, and particularly of the IRA.
Dr Daly took on the post of Catholic Primate at the age of 73 and was a surprise choice for the position, but became a prominent figure.
He retired in October 1996, when Cardinal Brady took over the role, and returned to his study of philosophy.
Cardinal Daly was renowned as a prolific author and has had many philosophical papers and books published.
