Un funzionario della polizia dice che il costo dell’attacco bomba di martedì contro la stazione PSNI di Strand Road potrebbe essere valutato in “centinaia di migliaia di stelrine”
I cordoni di sicurezza sulle strade intorno alla stazione di polizia sono stati rimossi ieri, anche se porte in metallo ancora isolano il tratto di Strand Road dove la bomba è esplosa.
Alcuni degli edifici che hanno sostenuto il peso maggiore dello scoppio potrebbe essere demoliti, dopo un attento esame da parte di ingegneri strutturali.
Anche la stessa stazione di polizia ha subito un danno sostanziale, con il cancello di metallo pesante che si affaccia su Strand Road visibilmente deformato, con diversi fori causati dalle schegge.
Mentre i proprietari degli esercizi comerciali sono lasciati a valutare il costo dell’attacco, Cris Yates ha detto che i danni alle proprietà sono “estesi”.
“Non sono un esperto ma mi aspetto che si parli di centinaia di migliaia di sterline”, ha affermato.
“Gli edifici vanno ancora valutati strutturalmente per vedere quali hanno bisogno di essere abbattuti, ma è chiaro che il danno è esteso”.
L’alto funzionario della polizia ha detto che è ” pura fortuna”, che nessuno sia stato ucciso nell’esplosione.
“Chi vede il danno causato può dire che parlare di incoscienza ed siamo molto fortunati che nessuno sia stato ucciso”.
Un imprenditore, Kevin Doherty da Strand Bingo, dice che potrebbe passare una settimana prima di poter riaprire la sua attività.
Ha rivelato che il tetto del suo edificio è stato danneggiato e diverse finestre sono state infrante.
“Abbiamo a che fare con un sacco di elettronica e ci sono buchi nel tetto – acqua ed elettricità non vanno molto bene insieme”, ha detto.
Yates ha anche rinnovato il suo appello per ottenere informazioni sulla bomba, in particolare il taxi dirottato che è stato utilizzato per trasportare l’ordigno alla stazione di polizia.
“Ci appelliamo per ricevere informazioni specifiche sui movimenti della Mazda 626 color argento proveniente dal Bogside a Strand Road, nelle prime ore del mattino di martedì, dalle 2:30 in poi. Se qualcuno là fuori ha visto o sentito qualcosa dovrebbe mettersi in contatto con noi”.
Nel frattempo la polizia ha anche confermato che agenti hanno eseguito ricerche nella zona di Hatmone Park nella serata di giovedè, come parte delle indagini.

DERRY COUNTS COST OF CAR BOMB BLAST
Derry’s top police officer says the cost of Tuesday’s dissident car bomb attack on Strand Road PSNI Station will run into “many hundreds of thousands of pounds.”
Security cordons on roads around the police station were lifted yesterday although metal gates still sealed off the stretch of Strand Road where the bomb went off.
It is thought some of the buildings which bore the brunt of the blast may have to be demolished following an examination by structural engineers.
The police station itself also sustained substantial damage with the heavy metal gate fronting Strand Road visibly buckled with several holes caused by flying shrapnel.
While business owners were left counting the cost of the bomb attack, CI Yates said the damage to commercial property was “extensive.”
“I’m not an expert but I would expect that it is going to run into many hundreds of thousands of pounds,” he said.
“The buildings still need to be structurally accessed to see what needs to be pulled down but it is clear that the damage is extensive.”
The senior police officer said it was “pure luck” that no one was killed in the explosion.
“Anyone who sees the damage caused can tell that this was reckless and it is very fortunate that no one was killed.”
One business owner, Kevin Doherty from Strand Bingo, says it could take a week before his premises can be reopened.
He revealed that the roof of his building was damaged and several windows were broken.
“We’re dealing with a lot of electronics and there are holes in the roof – water and electric don’t go together very well,” he said.
CI Yates also renewed his appeal for information on the bombing, particularly the hijacked taxi which was used to ferry the bomb to the police station.
“We are appealing for specific information about the movements of the silver Mazda 626 from the Bogside to Strand Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning from 2.30 onwards. Anyone out there who saw anything or heard anything should get in touch with us.”
Meanwhile police have also confirmed officers carried out searches in the Hatmore Park area of the city on the Thursday night as part of the investigation.
