Una delegazione del gruppo Families, Friends and Ex-POWs ha incontrato una delegazione di prigionieri di guerra a Maghaberry lunedi 28 giugno 2010. La delegazione era composta da Alex McCrory, Mandy Duffy, Paul Little, Marian Price, Carl Reilly e Elaine Carlin. La delegazione dei prigionieri comprendeva: Colin Duffy, Harry Fitzsimons, Sean Carlin, Brendy Conway, Damien McLaughlin e Stevie O’Donnell.
L’incontro che ha avuto luogo è stato molto istruttivo, in quanto i prigionieri di guerra sono stati in grado di raccontare in prima persona le condizioni in cui vivono al gruppo di sostegno. Allo stesso modo il gruppo ha potuto informare i prigionieri sulla campagna svolta all’esterno.
Richieste:
I prigionieri di guerra hanno parlato delle 2 richieste da soddisfare per porre fine alla protesta.
- Libertà di associazione con fine al movimento controllato.
- Cessazione delle degradanti e umilianti Strip Searches (Perquisizioni corporali).
Condizioni:
I prigionieri di guerra ha dipinto un quadro chiaro delle loro condizioni di vita attuali. Alcuni dicono sia come vivere in una fogna. I pavimenti sono ricoperti di escrementi e di urina e quando questi vengono spinti all’esterno delle celle sono deliberatamente rimandati all’interno dai secondini. La biancheria da letto e ogni altra cosa nella cella vengono sporcate. Durante i pasti i secondini, vestiti con indumenti protettivi – maschere, guanti ecc. – manipolano il cibo dei prigionieri di guerra usando gli stessi guanti contaminati con escrementi e urina.
Malattie:
Come risultato di questa gestione poco igienica degli alimenti i prigionieri di guerra si stanno ammalando. Vomito e diarrea sono già diffusi. Questo è motivo di grande preoccupazione, dato che le richieste di cure mediche sono state rifiutate. E’ solo una questione di tempo prima che alcuni dei prigionieri di guerra si ammalino gravemente.
Morale e unità:
Nonostante vivano in queste condizioni, il morale e l’unità tra i prigionieri di guerra è molto alto. Questo è stato evidente per la delegazione durante la riunione, quando i prigionieri di guerra hanno espresso totale fiducia nel raggiungimento delle loro richieste. Il cameratismo tra i prigionieri di guerra era evidente a tutti.
Campagna:
Il gruppo di sostegno ha delineato ai prigionieri di guerra come progredisce la campagna all’esterno e ha chiesto il loro parere. I prigionieri di guerra hanno dichiarato di essere felici per tutto il lavoro fatto dal gruppo fino ad oggi. Hanno detto che le manifestazioni svolte ‘taoibh amuigh’ (all’esterno) aumentano il morale di tutti i prigionieri di guerra. Le grandi proteste tenute davanti al carcere hanno dato grande sollievo ai prigionieri di guerra. Anche la necessità dell’incremento della campagna ‘taoibh amuigh’ (all’esterno) è stata menzionata.

I prigionieri di guerra hanno ringraziato il gruppo Families, Friends and Ex-POWs per l’incontro e per tutto il loro lavoro e sostegno. Hanno espresso la loro gratitudine a tutti coloro che hanno lottato per loro conto e hanno anche chiesto il loro continuo sostegno.
Delegation Meets Pows
A delegation of the Families, Friends and Ex-POWs campaign group met with a delegation of POWs in Maghaberry today, Monday 28th June 2010. The delegation consisted of Alex McCrory, Mandy Duffy, Paul Little, Marian Price, Carl Reilly and Elaine Carlin. The prisoner delegation included: Colin Duffy, Harry Fitzsimons, Sean Carlin, Brendy Conway, Damian McLaughlin and Stevie O’Donnell.
The meeting that took place was very informative; in that the POWs were able to relay at first hand the conditions which they are living under to the campaign group. Likewise the campaign group was able to brief the prisoners on the campaign outside.
Demands:
The POWs spoke of the 2 Demands which needed to be met in order to end the protest.
- Freedom of Association with an end to controlled movement.
- End to degrading and humiliating Strip Searches.
Conditions:
The POWs painted a vivid picture of their current living conditions. Some described it like living in a sewer. The landings are covered in excrement and urine and this is being pushed and walked back into their cells deliberately by the screws. The POWs’ bedding and belongings are also being deliberately interfered with. During meal times the screws, who are dressed in protective clothing; masks, gloves etc, are handling the POWs food using the same gloves that have been contaminated with excrement and urine.
Sickness:
As a result of this unhygienic handling of the POWs food the POWs are already becoming sick. Vomiting and diarrhea is already common place.This is of major concern given that requests for medical treatment have been refused. It’s only a matter of time before some of the POWs become seriously ill.
Morale and Unity:
Despite living under these conditions the morale and unity among the POWs is very high. This was quite evident to the delegation during the meeting. when the POWs were expressing total confidence in achieving their demands. The comradeship among the POWs was evident to all.
Campaign:
The campaign group outlined to the POWs how the campaign was progressing outside and asked the POWs for their views. The POWs stated that they were delighted with all the work the campaign group had done to date. They said that events carried out `taoibh amuigh’ increased the moral of all the POWs. The large protests at the gaol were specifically mentioned as they gave a big lift to the POWs. The need for the campaign taoibh amuigh to be escalated was also mentioned.

The POWs thanked the campaign group for the meeting and for all their work and support. They expressed their gratitude to everyone who has campaigned on their behalf and have also asked for their continued support.
