In arrivo la sentenza di appello per la causa civile sulla bomba di Omagh

La sentenza è stata preannunciata nell’appello presentato da quattro repubblicani citati con successo in giudizio da alcuni parenti delle vittime della bomba di Omagh

Gli avvocati dei quattro repubblicani hanno esposto i loro casi nel corso di una audizione di tre settimane davanti a tre giudici presso la Corte d’Appello di Belfast.

I giudici si sono impegnati a consegnare i loro verdetto dopo che avranno vagliato con attenzione tutto il materiale.

Ventinove persone furono uccise durante l’attacco della Real IRA il 15 agosto 1998.

Tra di essi una donna incinta di due gemelli.

I quattro uomini ritenuti responsabili per la bomba, in una sentenza storica pronunciata nel giugno 2009, sono Michael McKevitt, Liam Campbell, Colm Murphy e Seamus Daly.

Ai dodici parenti di alcune delle vittime della bomba di Omagh che hanno avanzato la causa civile sono stati assegnati in totale circa 2 milioni di euro di risarcimento.

I legali dei parenti delle vittime stanno portando avanti un appello riguardo al livello di risarcimento, perché, secondo loro, devono ricevere più soldi a causa della portata dell’indignazione sollevata.

Il giudice Higgins, insieme ai colleghi Girvan e Coghlin, ha dichiarato: “Ho il sospetto che sia i miei colleghi che io, quando abbiamo fissato il calendario (delle udienze), avevamo una scarsa comprensione circa la portata delle formalità e le questioni sollevate in questo caso.

“L’appello ha dato luogo a un numero considerevole di questioni che ci richiedono di considerare e riflettere. Poi daremo il nostro giudizio a tempo debito”.

Judgement reserved in Omagh bomb civil case appeal

Judgment has been reserved in an appeal by four republicans successfully sued by some of those bereaved in the 1998 Omagh bombing.

Lawyers for the men set out their cases during a three-week hearing in front of three senior judges at the Court of Appeal in Belfast.

The judges pledged to deliver their verdict once they have gone through all the material in detail.

Twenty-nine people were killed in the Real IRA attack.

They included a woman pregnant with twins.

The four men found liable for the bombing in a landmark ruling in June 2009 were: Michael McKevitt, Liam Campbell, Colm Murphy and Seamus Daly.

Twelve relatives of some of those killed at Omagh were awarded a total of £1.6m in damages.

Their legal team is also appealing the level of compensation, arguing that they should receive more because of the scale of the outrage.

Lord Justice Higgins, sitting with Lord Justices Girvan and Coghlin, said: “I suspect both my colleagues, like myself, when the timeframe was set, had little understanding as to the extent of the paperwork and the issues in this case.

“The appeal has given rise to a considerable number of issues which we will require to consider and reflect upon. Then we will give our judgment in due course.”
