In tribunale il presunto assassino di Alfredo Fusco

Un uomo è comparso in tribunale per l’omicidio del proprietario di un caffè di Belfast, avvenuto nel 1973

Robert Clarke, 58 anni, è accusato della morte di Alfredo Fusco, padre di quattro figli, colpito a morte nel suo negozio nel febbraio 1973.

Clarke, di Dundrod Road a Crumlin, deve rispondere di una seconda accusa per il possesso di due pistole e munizioni, con l’obiettivo di mettere in pericolo una vita.

Fu arrestato ad agosto in seguito ad una nuova indagine dell’Historical Enquiries Team, una speciale unità della polizia istituita per riesaminare gli omicidi irrisolti compiuti dai paramilitari in Irlanda del Nord.

Per l’omicidio di Fusco fu ritenuta responsabile l’UDA, sebbene i paramilitari lealisti non hanno mai ammesso la responsabilità.

La vittima, 58 anni, era un importante membro della comunità italiana di Belfast. Fu colpito a morte nel suo locale in York Road, North Belfast, dopo che gli uomini armati erano entrati nel caffè e lo avevano preso di mira.

Un pensionato si trovava vicino alla scena dell’attacco e, dopo aver udito i colpi di arma da fuoco, morì per un attacco di cuore.

Clarke ha parlato solo per confermare di aver inteso le accuse a suo carico, durante l’istruttoria tenutasi presso il tribunale di Belfast.

Il giudice distrettuale Fiona Bagnall ha accettato la richiesta del Public Prosecution Service (l’accusa, ndt) di farlo comparire presso il City Court.

Mentre la data dell’udienza deve ancora essere stabilita, Clarke è stato rilasciato dietro cauzione continuativa.

Viene obbligato a stare nella sua abitazione, è stato costretto a consegnare il passaporto e dovrà fare rapporto alla polizia due volte alla settimana.

Il giudice Bagnall ha anche acconsentito all’accusato di essere rappresentato da un collegio di due avvocati.

Trial for Belfast café murder accused

A man has been sent for trial charged with the murder of a Belfast cafe owner nearly 37 years ago.

Robert Clarke, 58, is accused of killing Catholic father-of-four Alfredo Fusco in a gun attack at his business premises in February 1973.

Clarke, of Dundrod Road, Nutts Corner, Crumlin, faces a second charge of possessing two guns and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

He was arrested in August following a new probe by the Historical Enquiries Team, a specialist police unit set up to re-examine unsolved terrorist murders in Northern Ireland.

Mr Fusco’s murder was blamed on the UDA, although the paramilitary organisation never admitted responsibility.

The 58-year-old victim, a prominent member of Belfast’s Italian community, was shot dead at his cafe on York Road, north Belfast after gunmen forced their way in and singled him out.

A pensioner who was near the scene of the attack and heard the gunfire collapsed and died from a heart attack.

Clarke spoke only to confirm he understood the charges against him during a preliminary enquiry at Belfast Magistrates Court.

District judge Fiona Bagnall granted a Public Prosecution Service application to have him returned for trial at the city’s Crown Court.

With a date still to be set, Clarke was released on continuing bail.

He has been ordered to stay at his home address, surrender his passport and report to police twice a week.

Mrs Bagnall, who was told all exhibits in the case have now been submitted, also consented to a defence application for two barristers to represent the accused.
