Incontro Cowen-Ritchie sulla minaccia repubblicana

Cowen to talk cross-border dissident plans

A delegation of Northern Irish politicians are to meet with Taoiseach Brian Cowen on Monday to discuss cross-border plans on how to deal with the dissident threat.

Brian Cowen - Margaret RitchieSDLP Leader Margaret Ritchie MP and Deputy Leader Patsy McGlone are to meet Mr Cowen in Dublin over how the two governments can co-operate against “attacks on Irish democracy”.

“Our most immediate concern is the rise in dissident violence, which is an attack on Irish democracy north and south,” Ms Ritchie said.

“We believe that the transfer of intelligence primacy from the PSNI to MI5 in 2007 was a mistake and a failure, but we note that An Garda Siochana continues to frustrate dissident operations and make arrests based on high-grade intelligence.”

The SDLP leader says that cross-border policing operations need to be stepped up to provide better security in Northern Ireland and in the Irish Republic.

“It is important that such security and policing co-operation should be built up in a broader context,” Ms Ritchie continued.

“The existing cross-border bodies set up under the Good Friday Agreement address a narrow range of activities and we would like to see these expanded.

“However, it is important that the mutual benefits are known throughout the island of Ireland. The profile of North South co-operation is generally low in the south and we hope the government might address this problem.”
