UUP to hold emergency meeting
An emergency executive meeting of the Ulster Unionist Party is to be held on Saturday, as speculation grows about the future of Tom Elliott.
The UUP leader sparked controversy at the Omagh count centre on Saturday, during an election victory speech, when he referred to Sinn Fein supporters in the hall as ‘scum.’
It is understood a direct challenge to his leadership is unlikely to materialise at the weekend meeting in Dungannon.
However, next month, the Ulster Unionists hold their AGM, where the leader’s position can be up for discussion.
Anyone wanting to contest the leadership have up until 5pm on Friday to be nominated.
Mr Elliott does not believe anyone will stand against him.
“We had a meeting of the Assembly group yesterday (Tuesday) and there was no hint of anything like that,” he said.
“And I don’t see anything like that happening.”
