L’attrazione turistica famosa nel mondo è al centro di un litigio dopo che un gruppo operante per conto dei Prigionieri Repubblicani ha affermato che un murales pianificato è stato minacciato di distruzione.
L’Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association ha affermato che martedì sera alcuni membri del gruppo sono stati avvertiti che se il dipinto proposto verrà dipinto sull’International Wall di Falls Road, sarà subito distrutto.
Questo è solo l’ultimo alterco riguardante l’International Wall, divenuto nel tempo un’attrazione di livello mondiale per i turisti in visita a West Belfast.
L’International Wall mostra una serie di murales politici dipinti dalle varie anime repubblicane.
Il portavoce dell’IRPWA Gerard Fitzpatrick ha detto che il gruppo ha pianificato di dipingere un murales riguardante l’internamento senza detenzione praticato sia in Irlanda che in Palestina.
Il gruppo ha pensato di posizionare il nuovo murales accanto a quello attualmente in realizzazione per commemorare gli hunger strikers, creato da differenti artisti.
Fitzpatrick ha detto che il murales mostrerà il parallelismo tra i “prigionieri politici palestinesi e irlandesi”.
“È un’opportunità per la comunità internazionale per vedere che i prigionieri repubblicani esistono ancora nel 2016”, ha affermato il portavoce di IRPWA.
Ci furono molte controversie a inizio 2016 quando il murales con il volto del primo blanketman repubblicano Ciaran Nugent venne rimosso per far posto ad una serie di dipinti sul 1916, comprendenti un murales sul leader unionista Edward Carson.
Da subito la zona dell’International Wall in cui era stato ritratto Carson venne presa di mira con il lancio di bombe di vernice.

West Belfast mural row erupts over plans for destruction
A WEST Belfast tourist attraction is at the centre of a fresh row after a prisoner group claimed that a planned wall mural has been threatened with destruction.
The Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association claimed on Tuesday night that members have been told that the proposed painting at the International Wall on the Falls Road will be defaced if it goes ahead.
It is the latest in a series of rows to erupt at the wall, which has become a must-see tourist attraction for people visiting the city.
It features a series of political murals painted by various republican groupings.
IRPWA spokesman Gerard Fitzpatrick said his group had planned to paint a mural highlighting what it says is detention and internment without charge in both Palestine and Ireland.
The group plans to position the new mural beside one currently being painted in memory of the hunger strikers by different artists.
Mr Fitzpatrick said the mural will draw parallels between “Palestinian and Irish political prisoners”.
“It is an opportunity for the international community to see that republican prisoners still exist in 2016,” he said.
There was controversy earlier this year when a mural depicting the first republican ‘blanketman’ Ciaran Nugent was removed to make way for a series of 1916 painting that included a picture of former unionist leader Edward Carson.
The Carson section of the wall was later paint bombed.
