Negli ultimi anni l’incessante dialogo tra i residenti nazionalisti ed il North & West Belfast Parade Forum (NWBFP) ha prevenuto gravi violenze durante il passaggio da Ardoyne delle marce lealiste.
Il processo era stato elogiato come possibile modello per altre parate cntroverse.
Comunque, quel processo pare essersi interrorro la scorsa notte, con il portavoce del NWBPF Tommy Cheevers che ha accusato i residenti di Ardoyne di “chiudere un occhio” agli attacchi contro le parate.
“Siamo stati messi all’angolo dai repubblicani che hanno ripetutamente fallito nel gestire correttamente le loro cosiddette proteste pacifiche per fermare gli attacchi alle nostra parate”, ha detto.
“Non siamo pronti a sopportare oltre”.
Cheevers ha chiesto una completa protezione da parte della polizia quando la parata attraverserà Ardoyne lunedì sera.
“Gerry Kelly ha dichiarato che siamo stati attaccati da pochi dissidenti ma crediamo che i repubblicani mainstream (che seguono la corrente principale, NdT) si nascondano dietro a questo paravento per convenienza”, ha proseguito Cheevers.
“Non vogliamo diventare i capri espiatori per i vari gruppi repubblicani che cercano di superarsi l’un l’altro.
“Crediamo che i costanti attacchi alle nostre parate dimostrino che i poteri legati alla sicurezza ed alla giustizia non dovrebbero essere trasferiti nel prossimo futuro”.
Senza gli steward lealisti non è chiaro se la polizia interverrà con gli agenti in divisa antisommossa per permettere alla parata di attraversare Ardoyne.
Negli ultimi anni i sostenitori lealisti sono stati trasportati su autobus attraverso la calda interfaccia.
Comunque Cheevers ha affermato che i lealisti non intendono salire sugli autobus lunedì sera, ma attraversare Ardoyne dopo il transito della parata.
“La Commissione Parate ha detto che 30 sostenitori potranno accompagnare le logge e le bande“, ha affermato.
“Ciò che accadrà con il resto della gente che intende tornare a casa lungo Crumlin Road non è possibile prevederlo.
“Ci hanno detto che Crumlin Road verrà riaperta appena la parata passerà Hesketh Avenue.
“Crediamo che qualsiasi sostenitore che si comporta bene dovrebbe avere la possibilità di percorrere Crumlin Road”.
Comunque Pat McLarnon, portavoce dell’Ardoyne Parades Dialogue Group, ha descritto la decisione di ritirare il servizio d’ordine lealista come “la ricetta per il disasteo”.
“I sostenitori lealisti, molti dei quali estremamente ubriachi, sono stati la principale fonte di problemi negli ultii anni”, ha fatto sapere.
“Sono stati guidati da paramilitari lealisti molto noti e hanno agito in maniera provocatoria e intimidatoria, provocando i residenti con le bandiere dell’UDA e UVF.
“Caricarli sugli autobus per fargli attraversare l’area è la più sensibile e sicura opzione.
“Siamo preoccupati per il rifiuto di utilizzare i bus e ci sembrano intenzionati a giungere ad un punto morto fino a quando gli venga permesso di tenere un comportamento provocatorio lungo Crumlin Road”.

Dialogue on flashpoint parade breaks down
In recent years groundbreaking dialogue between nationalist residents and the North & West Belfast Parade Forum has prevented serious violence during loyal order parades passing Ardoyne.
The process was praised as a possible blueprint for other contentious parades.
However, that process appeared to have broken down last night with NWBPF spokesman Tommy Cheevers accusing Ardoyne residents of “turning a blind eye” to attacks on parades.
“We’ve been pushed to the wire by republicans who have consistently failed to properly steward their so-called peaceful protests to stop attacks on our parades,” he said.
“We’re non prepared to put up with it any longer.”
Mr Cheevers demanded full police protection for the parade when it passes Ardoyne on Monday night.
“Gerry Kelly claimed we were attacked by a small number of dissidents but we believe mainstream republicans are hiding behind this cloak of convenience,” Mr Cheevers said.
“We’re not going to be the whipping boys for various republicans groups trying to outdo each other.
“We believe the constant attacks on our parades proves that the devolution of policing and justice powers shouldn’t happen any time in the near future.”
Without loyalist stewards it is unclear if police will now revert to using riot squad officers to force the parade passed Ardoyne.
In recent years loyalist supporters have been bussed past the flashpoint interface.
However, Mr Cheevers said loyalists would not board buses on Monday evening and intended walking past Ardoyne, once the main parade has passed.
“The Parades Commission says that 30 supporters will be allowed to accompany the lodges and bands, ” he said.
“What happens with the rest of the people who want to get home up the Crumlin Road is impossible to say.
“We’ve been told that the Crumlin Road will reopen once the parade passes Hesketh Avenue.
“We believe any supporters who behave themselves should be allowed to walk home up the Crumlin Road at the point.”
However, Ardoyne Parades Dialogue Group spokesman Pat McLarnon described the decision to withdraw loyalist parade stewards as a “recipe for disaster.”
“Loyalist supporters, many of them heavily drunk, have been the main source of the problem in recent years, ” he said.
“They’ve been led by well known loyalist paramilitaries and acted in provocative and intimidating manner, taunting residents with UDA and UVF flags.
“Busing them through the area was the sensible and safest option.
“We’re concerned they are now refusing to use buses ad seem intent on some kind of stand-off unless they’re allowed some kind of coat-trailing exercise up the Crumlin Road.”
