Un nuovo murales che illustra uno dei più iconici momenti del periodo dello sciopero della fame è stato svelato a West Belfast
Dipinto dall’artista locale Frank Quigley, il nuovo murales in Dorothy Maguire Corner a Whiterock mostra i membri dell’IRA che sparano sopra il feretro di Bobby Sands nel giorno del suo funerale, avvenuto nel maggio 1981. Il candidato dello Sinn Fein Pat Sheehan ha svelato il grande dipinto lunedì alle 14, coadiuvato dal suo collega di partito Steven Corr.

Il murales è stato dipinto in tempo per onorare il 30° anniversario della morte di Bobby Sands dopo 66 giorni di sciopero della fame, e ispirerà ricordi su Sands e sugli altri 9 repubblicani che persero la vita nei Blocchi H.
Il plotone dell’IRA era composto da tre volontari a volto coperto armati con fucili SKS. Ognuno sparò tre colpi in aria sopra al feretro di Bobby Sands, neo eletto parlamentare pr Femrnagh/South Tyrone, che fu il primo repubblicano a perdere la vita durante lo sciopero della fame del 1981 a Long Kesh.
Il portavoce del comitato Remembering Our Volunteers (Ricordando i Nostri Volontari, Ndt), Paddy Adams, dice che servirà anche per educare le persone troppo giovani a ricordare gli eventi turbolenti del periodo, che sollevarono reazioni in tutto il mondo.

“Questo è un dipinto dettagliato e qualificato, ed è proprio il plotone dipinto nei dettagli”, ha riferito all’Andersonstown News.
“Quegli uomini saranno in grado di guardare il murales e di riconoscersi al Top of the Rock, il tutto grazie all’Hunger Strile Committee e agli ex prigionieri presenti nella zona. E’ un momento importante per i repubblicani e questo è un pezzo di storia catturato brillantemente da uno dei migliori artisti del nostro tempo”.
Mural of iconic photo to be unveiled
A NEW mural depicting one of the most iconic moments of the hunger strike period has been unveiled in West Belfast.
Painted by local artist Frank Quigley, the new mural at Dorothy Maguire Corner in the Whiterock shows the famous IRA firing party making the final salute over the coffin of Bobby Sands on the day of his funeral in May, 1981. Local Assembly candidate Pat Sheehan unveiled the huge artwork Monday at 2pm, and was joined by Sinn Féin party colleague Steven Corr.
Inspire
The mural has been painted in time for the 30th anniversary of Bobby’s death after 66 days on hunger strike, and will inspire memories of Bobby Sands and the nine other hunger strikers who lost their lives in the H-Blocks.
The firing party consisted of three masked volunteers armed with SKS rifles, who fired three shots each over the coffin of Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP Sands, who was the first of the hunger strikers to die.
Spokesman for the Remembering Our Volunteers Committee, Paddy Adams, said it would also serve to educate those too young to remember of the turbulent events of the period, which sparked reactions around the world.
Skilled
“This is a skilled and detailed painting, and it is the actual firing party portrayed in detail,” he told the Andersonstown News.
“Those men will be able to look at it and recognise themselves at the Top of the Rock, thanks to the Hunger Strike Committee and ex-POWs in this area. It’s an important time for republicans, and this is a piece of history brilliantly captured by one of the best mural painters of our time.”
