La polizia ritiene che il fucile d’assalto tipo Armalite trovato a Strabane appartenga alla cosiddetta “New IRA”
Il fucile d’assalto è stato trovato insieme a molte munizioni durante un allarme sicurezza avviato venerdì sera nella zona industriale della cittadina della Contea di Tyrone.
L’arma verrà sottoposta ad analisi scientifiche.
Una palestra situata in Dublin Road è stata evacuata dopo il ritrovamento delle armi in un terreno nella zona di Lismourne Place.
Parlando ai media il Soprintendente Mark McEwan ha detto che l’arma apparteneva ai gruppi armati repubblicani, che avrebbero potuto utilizzarla per uccidere qualcuno.

Ha proseguito: “Come risultato dell’indagine sulla violenta attività repubblicana, in particolare della New IRA, è stata avviata un’operazione di polizia a Strabane nella serata di venerdì.
“Come risultato dell’operazione abbiamo recuperato ciò che sospettiamo sia un fucile d’assalto – ul fucile tipo Armalite – e munizioni.
“È importante dire che l’operazione è stata un successo perché ci ha permesso di rimuovere questa arma dalle nostre strade.
“Un’arma da fuoco come questa è disegnata per un solo e unico scopo: uccidere persone.
“Riteniamo che sia stata portata a Strabane per preparata un attacco contro la polizia, sicuramente un tentativo di omicidio, e ciò dimostra la completa indifferenza per questa comunità. L’uso di quest’arma in una zona residenziale, poteva avere un impatto devastante”.
Il parlamentare SDLP per West Tyrone, Daniel McCrossan, ha condannato i possessori di questo fucile d’assalto.
“La scoperta di quest’arma è uno sviluppo profondamente preoccupante”, ha affermato.
“Il proprietario di quest’arma illegale e irresponsabile è davvero pericoloso e abbiamo già visto questo genere di armi da fuoco utilizzate in attività illegali compreso il tentato omicidio di membri della polizia.
“La detenzione illegali di armi da fuoco è inaccettabile e permette a chi è dedito ad atti violenti di continuare a mettere in pericolo la popolazione.
“Dobbiamo essere tutti attenti contro questa minaccia”.

‘New IRA’ blamed for ‘Armalite’ rifle in Strabane
Police have blamed the ‘New IRA’ after a gun believed to be an Armalite-style assault rifle was found in Strabane, Co Tyrone.
It was discovered along with ammunition during a security alert at an industrial estate on Friday evening.
The weapon is set to undergo full forensic testing.
A gym was evacuated at the Dublin Road site after the items were found on the ground in the Lismourne Place area.
Speaking to the media on Monday, PSNI Superintendent Mark McEwan said the gun was held by dissidents intent on killing.

He continued: “As a result of an investigation into violent dissident republican activity, in particular the New IRA, a policing operation was mounted in Strabane on Friday evening.
“As a result of that we have recovered what we suspect to be an assault rifle – an Armalite-type assault rifle – and ammunition.
“It’s important to say the operation has been a success in terms of removing this weapon from our streets.
“A gun like this is designed for one reason and one reason only and that is to kill people.
“We believe it has been moved into Strabane to mount an attack on police and such an attack would be attempted murder and shows complete disregard for this community – weapons like this, fired in a built-up area, could have a devastating impact.”
Police asked anyone with information to come forward.
SDLP MLA for West Tyrone, Daniel McCrossan, condemned those who were responsible for keeping the weapon.
“This discovery of this weapon is a deeply worrying development,” he said.
“Illegal and irresponsible gun ownership is very dangerous and we have seen weapons of this type used in illegal activity including the attempted murder of police.
“The illegal storing of firearms is unacceptable and it allows those who committed to violence to continue to put the public at risk.
“We must all be vigilant against this threat and I would encourage anyone with any relevant information to contact the police immediately.”
