Mirror investigation has found the IRA still has stashes of weapons and explosives throughout the island

The IRA has up to one ton of high-grade Semtex explosive stashed in hideouts across Ireland, the Mirror can reveal.

More than 200 AK47s and other viable guns including handguns and pistols, also remain in circulation despite decommissioning in 1998.

The Mirror has also found that 234 former active IRA members now believe they have been left high and dry by republicans they claimed assured them of an amnesty for their terror crimes.

One-time IRA volunteers have said they understood they would be able to “return to normality” following the Stormont House Agreement.

But Sinn Fein has withdrawn from the agreement, which was reached with the Government and other Northern Irish parties in December, plunging the peace process into fresh crisis.

A republican source said: “There’s a sense of shock amongst us all that we were promised so much and none of it’s now on the table. We were assured everyone was ready to move on.”

The Government has been leading talks for more than a year to create the Stormont House Agreement and £2billion has been put aside to finance the new Northern Ireland they hope it will create.
