Ieri la Tesoreria di Westminster ha annunciato che la parlamentare, al centro di uno scandalo, ha formalmente annunciato la rinuncia ad occupare il seggio della circoscrizione di Strangford.
Si sa che la lettera di dimissioni è stata ricevuta e accettata dall’Assemblea.
La sinora Robinson si dimetterà anche dal Castlereagh Borough Council. Le sue dimissioni sono state annunciate dal direttore del consiglio comunale.
La sua carriera politica si è interrotta dopo la scoperta del prestito di 50.000 sterline provenienti da due imprenditori e usati per finanziare il locale del suo giovane amante. Iris Robinson non aveva dichiarato i suoi interessi finanziari nella società sebbene fosse membro del consiglio che permise a Kirk McCambley di affittare il locale sulle rive del fiume Lagan.
Lo scorso fine settimana il DUP ha detto che la Robinson stava lasciando il partito e era pronta a dimettersi da parlamentare, sia a Westminster che a Stormont.
Fonti del partito hanno indicato che non cercheranno un’elezione suppletiva per rimpiazzare la Robinson prima delle prossime elezioni generali.
Ieri il Tesoro ha annunciato di aver nominato Iris Robinson Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern – la formula arcaica intrapresa per dimettersi dalla House of Commons. I parlamentari di Westminster non possono semplicemente abbandonare il seggio, un’anomalia legale che deriva da una risoluzione della House of Commons presa a marzo 1624.
Morte, interdizione ed espulsione sono gli unici motivi per i quali un seggio può essere reso vacante durante la vita di un Parlamento.
Quindi un parlamentare che desidera dimettersi deve passare attraverso il processo di assunzione presso un ufficio della Corona, che non gli (o le) permette di sedere nella House of Commons (Casa dei Comuni).
Il salario annuale di Iris Robinson dalla House of Commons è stato di 64.766 sterline, con ulteriori 14.367 sterline incassate dall’Assemblea di Stormont, cui vanno sommate le 9.500 sterline ottenute dal consiglio di Castlereagh.
In tutto il salario è di 88.633 sterline, pari a 99.500 euro, ovvero quasi 242 sterline al giorno.
Iris Robinson to resign as an MLA on Monday
Yesterday at Westminster the Treasury also announced that the scandal- hit politician had formally announced her resignation as MP for Strangford.
It is understood that her resignation letter has been received and accepted by the Assembly.
Mrs Robinson will also be standing down from Castlereagh Borough Council. Her resignation was announced by the council’s acting chief executive.
Her political career became untenable after it emerged she had secured £50,000 from two property developers to finance her teenage lover’s cafe. She failed to declare her financial interest in the venture even though she was a member of the council which awarded the tender to Kirk McCambley.
At the weekend the DUP said Mrs Robinson was leaving the party and stepping down as an MP and MLA.
Party sources have indicated they will not be seeking a Westminster by-election to replace Mrs Robinson before the upcoming General Election.
Yesterday, the Treasury announced she been appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern — the archaic process undertaken to resign from the House of Commons. MPs are not permitted simply to resign their seat, a legal anomaly dating back to a resolution of the House of Commons in March 1624.
Death, disqualification and expulsion are the only means by which a member’s seat may be vacated during the lifetime of a Parliament.
Therefore an MP wishing to resign has to go through the process of applying for a paid office of the Crown, which disqualifies him or her from holding a seat in the Commons.
Her annual salary from the Commons had been £64,766, with a further £14,367 paid out by the Assembly each year, plus £9,500 from Castlereagh council.
That represented an annual total of £88,633 — some £242 per day.
