In una dichiarazione di questa sera, la parlamentare ha affermato che lo stress e la tensione della vita politica ha presentato il conto e la sua salute ne ha sofferto.
Iris Robinson, 60 anni, è stata parlamentare a Westminster per la circoscrizione elettorale di Strangford dal 2001.
Suo marito rappresenta East Belfast dal 1979.
“Come molta gente sarà a conoscenza, recentemente ho cercato di ritornare a rappresentare a tempo pieno i miei elettori dopo il mio ultimo periodo di malattia. Durante gli anni, ho subito una lunga serie di operazioni e se non ne ho mai parlato pubblicamente, ho, in questo contesto, combattuto anche contro gravi attacchi di depressione.
“Solo chi ha affrontato simili sfide nella vita conoscerà le prove affrontate da chi è profondamente depresso e l’angoscia causata a chi ti sta intorno mentre sei alle prese con la malattia che ti cambia la personalità”.
La signora Robinson è stata direttrice del comitato sanitario all’Assemblea nordirlandese. La sua decisione di abbandonare la politica ha seguito le discussioni con il marito durante le feste di Natale.
“Una persona su quattro lotta con malattie mentali di vario genere e pochi ne parlano apertamente. Quando sarò in grado di farlo, voglio dire di più su questo periodo della mia vita.
“Lo stress e la tensione della vita pubblica ha presentato il conto e la mia salute ne ha sofferto”.

Iris Robinson quits politics due to depression
In a statement tonight, she said the stress and strain of public life came at a cost and her health had suffered.
Mrs Robinson, 60, has been MP for the Strangford constituency since 2001.
Her husband has represented East Belfast since 1979.
‘As many people will be aware, I have recently tried to return to the full-time work of representing my constituents following my latest period of illness. Over the years, I have undergone a long series of operations and though I have never talked about it publicly, I have, against this background, also battled against serious bouts of depression.
‘Only those who have faced similar challenges in life will know the ordeal faced by those who are profoundly depressed and the distress caused to those around them as they grapple with personality changing illness.’
Mrs Robinson is a former chairperson of the health committee at the Northern Ireland Assembly. Her decision to leave office followed talks with her husband over Christmas.
‘One in four of the population struggle with mental illnesses at one level or another yet few talk about it openly. When I am better able to do so, I want to say more about this period of my life.
‘The stress and strain of public life comes at a cost and my health has suffered.’
