Nel suo discorso alla conferenza annuale del partito tenuto sabato a Cookstown, il parlamentare di North Antrim si è scagliato contro quello che ha descritto come il triste fallimento dello scollegato Esecutivo condiviso di Stormont.
“Per dimostrare l’effetto che anche l’opposizione di un solo uomo può avere, abbiamo spinto la questione del deficit democratico nell’ordine del giorno, con gli altri che ammettono oggi che il caso per un’opposizione democratica resta senza risposta”, ha affermato.
Allister ha promesso che il suo partito continuerà ad essere una spina nel fianco della coalizione DUP/Sinn Fein, accusando i partiti minori, compreso l’Ulster Unionist Party, di farsi travolgere.
Ha detto: “Prima SDLP e UUP riconoscono di essere gli zerbini del governo, riscoprendo la loro dignità e indipendenza e uscendo fuori per distinguersi nell’opposizione, prima ritornerà questo fondamento della democrazia a Stormont”.
Durante il suo discorso, Allister è stato sprezzante sul lavoro svolto in Assemblea lo scorso anno e ha detto che il governo aveva bisogno di una drastica riforma.
“È ricolmo di 108 parlamentari, quando la metà sarebbe sufficiente”, ha affermato. “Dodici ministeri quando sei sono abbastanza, sprechi da non credere per 161 spin doctor, cinque milioni di sterline in ospitalità, 400mila sterline per i fotografi, una quantità indefinita di viaggi all’estero, quasi 100 milioni di sterline sperperate in inutili organismi Nord-Sud e 20 milioni di sterline per un santuario a Maze.
“Nel frattempo, cresce la disoccupazione e tutto il ministero del DETI (Imprese, Commercio e Investimenti, guidato da Arlene Foster) può assicurare che non siamo così male come Dublino”.
Poco prima, nel discorso, Allister aveva affermato che lo Sinn Fein potrebbe fare di più per contrastare la minaccia dei repubblicani che hanno ucciso la guardia carceraria David Black.
Black, 52 anni, è stato ucciso sull’autostrada M1 mentre si recava al lavoro presso la prigione di massima sicurezza di Maghaberry il 1° novembre.
Un nuovo gruppo che si fa chiamare IRA ha rivendicato la responsabilità per l’attacco.
Allister ha detto ai delegati presso l’Hotel Royal: “Questo omicidio dell’IRA è altrettanto odioso e deviante come quelli dei loro fratelli di sangue dei Provos, per i quali il premio era far entrare i terroristi nel governo.
“Le condanne dello Sinn Fein non hanno significato fintanto che non riescono a denunciare chi fu addestrato nell’IRA ed è ancora dedito all’omicidio, perché gli assassini di David Black non erano novizi”.
Il leader del TUV ha anche elogiato la famiglia Black perché hanno chiesto che il vice primo ministro Martin McGuinness non partecipasse al funerale della guardia carceraria.
Allister ha detto: “Saluto la famiglia Black per aver avuto la forza e il coraggio di spezzare l’ipocrisia e la finzione dicendo a McGuinness e allo Sinn Fein di stare lontani dal funerale. C’è un messaggio per coloro che ogni giorno si aggrappano allo Sinn Fein per il governo a Stormont. Le parole dure non lo interrompono quando sono contraddette dalle azioni che vivono nel mantra «quello che lo Sinn Fein vuole, lo Sinn Fein ottiene» a Stormont”.

Stormont without opposition is absurd – Allister
In his speech to the party’s annual conference in Cookstown on Saturday, the North Antrim MLA slammed what he described as the dismal failure of the disconnected power-sharing Stormont Executive.
“By demonstrating the effect even a one-man opposition can have, we have pushed this issue of democratic deficit up the agenda, with others now increasingly conceding that the case for a democratic opposition is unanswerable,” he said.
Mr Allister vowed that his party would continue to be a thorn in the side of the DUP/Sinn Fein coalition and accused the smaller parties including the Ulster Unionists and SDLP of allowing themselves to be walked over.
He said: “The sooner the SDLP and UUP recognise they are doormats in government, rediscover their dignity and independence and step out to distinguish themselves in opposition, the sooner will this fundamental of democracy return to Stormont.”
During his speech, Mr Allister was scornful of the work done in the Assembly over the past year and said the Government was in need of drastic reform.
“Bloated with 108 MLAs when half would be enough,” he said. “Twelve departments when six would do, waste beyond belief on 161 spin doctors, £5 million on hospitality, £400,000 on photographers, an undisclosed sum on foreign travel and still £100 million to squander on useless north-south bodies and £20 million on a shrine at the Maze.
“Meanwhile, unemployment spirals upwards and all the DETI Minister (Arlene Foster) can assure us is that we’re not as bad as Dublin.”
Earlier in the speech Mr Allister claimed that Sinn Fein could do more to tackle the threat posed by dissident republicans who killed prison officer David Black.
The 52-year-old father of two was gunned down on the M1 as he drove to work at Maghaberry prison on November 1.
A new grouping calling itself the IRA has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Mr Allister told delegates at the Royal Hotel: “This IRA murder was just as odious, just as hate-filled and just as deviant as those of their Provo blood brothers, for whom the reward was terrorists in government.
“Sinn Fein condemnations are meaningless so long as they fail to give up those their IRA trained who still practice their trade of murder – because the killers of David Black were no novices.”
The TUV leader also praised the Black family for their request that Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness should not attend the prison officer’s funeral.
Mr Allister said: “I salute the Black family for having the strength and courage to cut through the hypocrisy and pretence by telling McGuinness and Sinn Fein to stay away from the funeral. There is a message there for those who day and daily clutch Sinn Fein to their bosom in government in Stormont. Tough words don’t cut it when contradicted by actions that live by the mantra ‘what Sinn Fein wants, Sinn Fein gets’ in Stormont.”
