L’integralista unionista ha ripetutamente testato la pazienza di ri-eletto Speaker William Hay il primo giorno della nuova legislatura dell’Assemblea ed è stato sbeffeggiato da tutti i lati del Parlamento.
Dopo aver descritto più volte lo Sinn Fein come “IRA/Sinn Fein” e in un’occasione ha chiamato il parlamentare di North Belfast Gerry Kelly come il “dinamitardo Kelly”, il partito di Caral Ni Chuilin ha chiesto allo Speaker di esaminare ciò che lei ha descritto come commenti “contrari al sistema parlamentare”.
In precedenza, Allister ha detto al riconfermato Speaker di essere un candidato di “IRA/Sinn Fein”, e lo ha accusato di prendere decisioni pro-Sinn Fein e di sopprimere la libertà di espressione in camera. “La sua nomina è di nuovo la conseguenza di un altro affare sordido tra il DUP e Sinn Fein,” ha dichiarato.
Ha poi aggiunto: “Ora possiamo guardare avanti alla nuova depravazione nelle sistemazioni di questo Parlaento, quando nel 2014 un membro dell’IRA/Sinn Fein assumerà la leadership di questa casa e penso che cadrà come una vergogna su coloro che hanno agevolato tale accordo “.
Ma quando ha obiettato sull’elezione di Francie Molloy, Sinn Fein a vice, non è riuscito a spingere la questione al voto perché come unico dissenziente non è stato in grado di fornire i due scrutatori richiesti che avrebbero dovuto registrare ogni “No”.
Il leader del TUV, unico membro del suo partito ad ottenere un seggio ed eletto senza raggiungere la quota a North Antrim, ha provocato una dura reazione quando ha fatto l’ennesima domanda allo Speaker. “Sei arrivato quasi al punto di sfidare l’autorità e non arriverei fino a quel punto, certamente non ci arriverei”, ha affermato Hay.
Ma uno degli incontri più drammatici è avvenuto al di fuori della camera dell’Assemblea quando l’onorevole Allister è emerso per condurre una conferenza stampa ed il DUP lo ha interrotto quando i parlamentari del partito lo hanno superato mentre lui stava ancora parlando, per consentire a Peter Robinson di iniziare il suo discorso ai giornalisti.
Il leader del DUP ha continuato a descrivere l’uomo del TUV come un “fanatico” e un “irritante”. Robinson ha aggiunto: “Non abbiamo intenzione di essere messi da parte dalle buffonate di qualcuno che è un attore marginale, qualcuno che è strisciato attraverso le porte di Stormont al nono conteggio senza raggiungere la quota”.
Più tardi anche Martin McGuinness è stato altrettanto sprezzante, dicendo: “Jim Allister non sta per dettare o dominare i lavori in questa Assemblea Fa una figura molto isolata e molto sola e penso che con il passare del tepo la gente si stancherà di ascoltare le sue buffonate”.
Allister tests Speaker’s patience
The unionist hardliner repeatedly tested the patience of re-elected Speaker William Hay on the first day of the new Assembly term and brought jeers from all sides of the house.
Having described Sinn Fein as “IRA/Sinn Fein” several times and on one occasion called north Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly “bomber Kelly”, the party’s Caral Ni Chuilin has asked the Speaker to review what she described as “unparliamentary” comments.
Earlier, Mr Allister told the reappointed Speaker he was a nominee of “IRA/Sinn Fein”, and accused him of making pro-Sinn Fein decisions and suppressing freedom of speech in the chamber. “His elevation again is the consequence of another sordid deal between the DUP and Sinn Fein,” he claimed.
He added: “Now we can look forward to new depravity in the arrangements of this house when in 2014 a member of IRA/Sinn Fein takes over the leadership of this house and I think it falls as a shame upon those who have facilitated that arrangement.”
But when he objected to the election of Sinn Fein’s Francie Molloy as deputy speaker, he failed to push the matter to a vote because as the only dissenter he was not able to provide the required two tellers to record any “No” votes.
The TUV leader, who became the sole member of his party to win a seat when he was elected without reaching the quota in north Antrim, provoked a stern reply when he again questioned the Speaker. “You are almost coming to a point of challenging the authority of the chair and I would not go there, I certainly would not go there,” Mr Hay said.
But one of the most dramatic encounters unfolded outside the Assembly chamber when Mr Allister emerged to conduct a press conference and the DUP cut him short when party MLAs walked across him while he was still speaking to enable Peter Robinson to start his address to reporters.
The DUP leader went on to describe the TUV man as a “crank” and an “irritant”. Mr Robinson added: “We are not going to be put off by the antics of somebody who is a fringe player, somebody who crept through the doors of Stormont on the ninth count on DUP surpluses without reaching the quota.”
Later Martin McGuinness was equally dismissive, saying: “Jim Allister is not going to dictate or dominate proceedings in this assembly. He cuts a very isolated and very lonely figure and I think people will get fed up listening to his antics as time passes by.”
