Il leader del Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) ha fortemente criticato il National Hunger Strike Youth Weekend, iniziato oggi pomeriggio nella Contea di Armagh.
“[Questo] pomeriggio giovani repubblicano arriveranno allo Shane O’Neill’s GAA di Camlough, dove campeggeranno per il fine settimana nella festa del terrorismo”, ha affermato.
In risposta, gli organizzatori della manifestazione hanno detto che il parere di Jim Allister è non è una sorpresa per loro.
“Il TUV fonda la sua carriera politica vivendo una realtà alternativa”, ha detto David Collins, segretario nazionale dell’Ógra Sinn Féin, che sta coordinando il fine settimana.
“Lo scopo del weekend è quello di educare i giovani sullo sciopero della fame del 1981 e coinvolgerli nel dibattito sugli effetti sul panorama politico d’Irlanda, così come per commemorare i nostri patrioti morti,” ha affermato.
Le attività includono dibattiti sull’eredità degli scioperi della fame, mostre e visite storiche nel South Armagh. Il campo si conclude con una commemorazione nazionale dello sciopero della fame alle 14:00 di domenica.
Gli organizzatori hanno anche promesso una grande componente sociale per il fine settimana, con i manifesti pubblicitari che recitano “Ceol agus craic”, musica e divertimento.
Allister è stato particolarmente critico sull’ospitalità fornita all’evento da parte di un club GAA.
“(Il GAA) rimane un’organizzazione profondamente settaria, disposta a facilitare la celebrazione e la glorificazione del terrorismo”, ha detto.
Ha descritto come “sicofanti” le persone che hanno paragonato la presenza di un ministro dello Sinn Féin ad una recente partita a Windsor Park, la casa del calcio dell’Irlanda del Nord, con quella di un politico DUP assistere a una partita GAA.
“Questo fine settimana dimostrerà la follia di cercare di tracciare un parallelo tra l’Irish Football Association e la GAA”, ha aggiunto.
Mercoledì scorso, Carál Ní Chuilín, ministro della Cultura nell’esecutivo nordirlandese, è diventata la prima importante repubblicana ad assistere ad una partita di calcio dell’Irlanda del Nord.
Nel 2008, Edwin Poots divenne il politico DUP primo ad assistere ad una partita di calcio gaelico in veste ufficiale, quando si recò a Pairc Esler a Newry per vedere una partita di McKenna Cup tra Down e Donegal.

Allister criticises youth camp
The leader of the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) party strongly criticised the National Hunger Strike Youth Weekend, which begins today in Co Armagh.
“[This] afternoon young republicans will arrive at Shane O’Neill’s GAA club, Camlough, where they will camp for the weekend’s terror fest,” he said.
In response, organisers of the event have said that Mr Allister’s opinion comes as no surprise to them.
“The TUV makes its political career from living in an alternate reality,” said David Collins, national secretary of Ógra Sinn Féin, which is co-ordinating the weekend.
“The purpose of the weekend is to educate young people on the hunger strike of 1981 and involve them in debate as to its effects on the political landscape of Ireland, as well as to commemorate our patriot dead,” he said.
Activities include debates about the legacy of the hunger strikes, exhibitions and historical tours of south Armagh. The camp ends with a national hunger strike commemoration at 2pm on Sunday.
Organisers have also promised a large social element to the weekend, with posters advertising “ceol agus craic”.
Mr Allister was particularly critical of the fact that a GAA club was hosting the event.
“It remains a deeply sectarian organisation willing to facilitate the celebration and glorification of terrorism,” he said.
He described as “sycophants” people who have compared the attendance of a Sinn Féin government minister at a recent match in Windsor Park, the home of Northern Ireland soccer, with that of a DUP politician attending a GAA match.
“This weekend will demonstrate the folly of trying to draw parallels between the Irish Football Association and the GAA,” he added.
On Wednesday, Carál Ní Chuilín, Minister for Culture in the Northern Ireland Executive, became the first senior republican politician to attend a Northern Ireland soccer game.
In 2008, Edwin Poots became the first DUP politician to attend a Gaelic football match in an official capacity when he travelled to Páirc Esler in Newry to view a McKenna Cup game between Down and Donegal.
